A bipartisan group of lawmakers called for a $35 billion increase in health care spending for the renewal of State Children's Health Insurance Program, or SCHIP which would add $50 billion over 5 years. An additional 3 million uninsured children would be covered in addition to the current 6.6 million children. The Bushistas only wanted a $5 billion increase over the next five years. Why so cheap when we piss away billions each month ruining the health and well being of the people of Iraq?
Interestingly the money needed would be provided by levying a 61 cent a pack increase on the cigarette taxes.
The tax increase would be used to subsidize health insurance for children and some adults with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid but not high enough to afford insurance on their own.
Bush's excuses as to why he will veto the bill: (which happen to be ironically ridiculous)
- Taxpayers will feel the pinch (being the compassionate conservative he is).
- Small businesses are feeling the pinch of having to provide health care benefits to its employees. (business before humanity)
- Some poor families may cancel their private insurance in order to use the "government" health care. (only the wealthy would do such a thing)
- Billions of dollars in insurance costs will be shifted from the private sector to the federal government under the Senate proposal. (gosh, the private sector businesses will be hurt)
