Sauce for the goose....

First I offer the following letter exactly as it appeared in this a.m.'s Iowa City Press-Citizen:

"Shooting controls deer population"
"The overpopulation of deer has long been a problem in Iowa City. The Iowa DNR and a deer task force in Iowa City are being challenged with the best way to regulate our deer populations and the safest and most humane way of doing this.

"Those who oppose regulation believe that killing deer is cruel and inhumane and the use of sharpshooters to regulate the population should be banned. Yet the reproduction rate of deer could lead to the population doubling in two to three years, which can become very dangerous for our local highways.

"I applaud the approach and the methods Iowa City has chosen. The city examined many methods of population regulation, and using sharpshooters was the cheapest, most humane and safest for the citizens.

"But I would like to hear your opinion. Do you agree or disagree? Any response will be very helpful. Please contact me at: deerregulation@yahoo.com

To which I replied:

"Perhaps the best way to respond to your request is to return your words to you as written with only slight editing for a different perspective:

"The overpopulation of (humans) has long been a problem in (the world). The (United Nations) and (the U.S. Armed Forces) are being challenged with the best way to regulate our (human) populations and the safest and most humane way of doing this.

"Those who oppose regulation believe that killing (humans) is cruel and inhumane and the use of sharpshooters to regulate the population should be banned. Yet the reproduction rate of (humans) could lead to the population doubling in two to three years, which can become very dangerous for our (food supply).

"I applaud the approach and the methods the (U.S.) has chosen. The (country) examined many methods of population regulation, and using sharpshooters was the cheapest, most humane and safest for the citizens (who are not "useless eaters").

"But I would like to hear your opinion. Do you agree or disagree? Any response will be very helpful. Please contact me at: deerregulation@yahoo.com

"Maybe these (revised) ideas are not so far-fetched after all--but only if the killing is instantaneous. The practices of beating people to death in prison cells, starvation, burning them to death with napalm, and submitting humans to the long, slow agonizing death caused by Depleted Uranium radiation poisoning are all woefully inefficient (although quite lucrative monetarily for munitions manufacturers). Carpet-bombing the Middle East with nukes would of course be a much more humane way of addressing the situation, but that method would naturally pollute the oil supply. No oil, no gas. No gas, no automobiles. Wait! That's it! No automobiles means our highways would be safer. And highway safety was your main concern, was it not?"
