The Vatican vs Obama

What really struck me in this piece in yesterday's Washington Post, Forging a New Relationship: Controversial Issues Pose a Challenge for Obama and Pope was this part:
Cardinal James Francis Stafford, former archbishop of Denver, who said that Obama's statements on abortion reflect "an agenda and vision that are aggressive, disruptive and apocalyptic." (Stafford, who as head of a Vatican court is one of the highest-ranking Americans at the Holy See, noted that he spoke only on his own behalf.)
Does this cardinal not see what a completely idiotic statement this is? Has he even read a newspaper to see what is going on in the world? Perhaps if he took his ridiculous hat off for five minutes, he could use his brain. If anything is aggressive, disruptive and apocalyptic in this world it's Israel's treatment of the Palestinians... oh and not to mention Africa or maybe Pakistan, etc. But alas, the Catholic Church is more concerned about stem cell research and curtailing women's rights than poking their noses into some of the worst social justice issues that are happening worldwide at this very moment. The article does say that the Pope himself wished Obama well. We'll just see about that.

Quite frankly, if Obama and the Vatican don't see eye to eye, that may be a good thing. The Vatican and the Bush administration were good buddies and look where that got the world.
