What's Up With Eggs?

For years, the price of a dozen grade A large eggs at the local Safeway in my corner of The Old Dominion has been $1.19-$1.39 for the past ten years. Now, all of a sudden, and I mean over the course of a couple of weeks, the "regular" price of the same dozen at the same Safeway is $3.09, and the "sale" price is $2.09.

WTF? Anyone have any idea why the price of eggs should go up so precipitously and so quickly? Has anyone else seen this in their own grocery stores? Any other grocery products going through the roof like this?

Inquiring minds want to know.
