D O U C H E B A G S of liberty

Last night, in response to my -- Hey, no fair! -- post, Liz commented:

I was watching CNN in the hotel room earlier and by golly, all they were talking about was fascism. They are redefining it! Those bastards.

They must have found out that the liberals have been using the word to describe them, so now they have decided to take over the word.. and a complicit corporate media makes it possible.
'
I declare that we call them douchebags from now on and let them try to redefine that.

I totally agree Liz. NOW -- WHICH DEFINITION shall we use for DOUCHEBAG -- There are 38 to choose from. I had to stop at #15 -- I couldn't take it anymore!!!

You will see what I mean.....

Oh... and while I was over at urbandictionary, I noticed they have a new entry -- BONUS BEER*:

*Beer which one "discovers" having not known that it was there. Typically this occurs after a party or family gathering/event and may often involve a secondary fridge or forgotten cooler. Discovery of said beer is usually followed by feelings of joy and well being, similar to finding unexpected money in a jacket one has not worn in some time.
I'll just clean out the fridge, haven't done that in a while... wait a sec what's this? BONUS BEER! Righteous!

UPDATE

I changed the title of the post (just a little) to reflect my personal favorite for the definition of douchebag. #14!! by Jon Stewart --(probably because he's my favorite man). The other ones were pretty spot on too.

"The Rocky Trailer Picture Show"

Jon Stewart IS THE MASTER!

On this one year anniversary of Katrina, I have read about (thanks to Annti) and been made aware of, so much that I never knew. Nothing could have stopped this monster's landfall, but we certainly are capable of preserving life and home in anticipation of such a storm. After reading the latest about how so many warnings from experts were ignored, it has become obvious to me that the entire bush regime chose NOT to take this seriously. Now, we see what happens when we don't pay attention to what our "elected" politicians are/are not doing. They are a bunch of morons and we need to send them and their side show on an extended tour.

This video of Jon Stewart's reaction to the Rocky "trailer episode" says is all. Rocky -- "A Hurricane Katrina victim proves to be the anti-Cindy Sheehan."

HEY - no fair! They stole OUR word for THEM......(Fascists)

DON'T LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT

Check out this story from CNN -- The new GOP buzzword: Fascism

Another fine example of "those that scream the loudest"

Do they really think we are that stupid? Can they possibly spin this to really make themselves out as the father's of freedom and not the true fascists that they are

*********UPDATE*******

Hat tip to Citizen Spot for sending this in: "Keith Olberman delivers one hell of a commentary on rumsfeld" via crooksandliars.

"The economic agenda for the next president couldn’t be clearer."

Quoted from a NYTimes editorial titled Downward Mobility. The Census Bureau numbers are out for 2005. The economy is NOT as good as we are told it is.

"The Census findings are yet another indication that growth alone is not the answer to the economic and social ills of poverty, income inequality and lack of insurance. Economic growth was strong in 2005, and productivity growth was impressive. What have been missing are government policies that help to ensure that the benefits of growth are broadly shared — like strong support for public education, a progressive income tax, affordable health care, a higher minimum wage and other labor protections."

I have read about The idea of a progressive income tax over at James Kroeger's Nontrivial pursuits

I believe that today, it is the only way to go. I hope candidates jump all over this (and honestly support it's theory) because it is something the middle and lower classes need in order to have a chance at a halfway decent life. I should re-phrase that to one class actually -- the Common Class.

"Instead of seeking to enrich themselves the 'Easy Way', through foolish collectivist political schemes, rich people do have the option of improving their financial status The Old-Fashioned Way---i.e., by earning it in the marketplace."

Time for a change -- The great wealth divide is far too wide....

"The real wars will be over water, not oil."

You know how I LOVE a conspiracy theory -- check this one out!

Conspiracy theorists fear the United States is secretly taking control of South America's largest underground reservoir of fresh water.

“I know you love New Orleans, and New Orleans needs you. She needs people coming home. She needs people — she needs those saints to come marching back, is what she needs.” (NY times)

Meanwhile, have a gander at some stupid post-Katrina quotes from the Bushistas.

Young and Dead and No One Remembers Why

Since the MSM is having such a field day parading out young, beautiful dead girls, I thought I'd bring this up to any readers who may have missed this on KoS.

Some of them were as young as 18; just out of high school and they never had a chance. Some of them had young children and families that loved them dearly. They are still dead. Why? Because they were knowingly sent into harm's way, because they felt a need to protect their country men. Because they believed the lies that were told to them.

How many Americans have found the silence of the grave due to this administration their incompetence and their lies?

9/11 - I believe the current number is around 2,752 (even if they did not actively cause 9/11 their refusal to listen to their own experts makes them liable for this)

Iraq - over 2,600 troops dead, over 19,000 injured (since we're only talking about Americans today we'll just glaze over the 40,000+ Iraqi deaths)

Afghanistan - 329 at last count

NOLA - well that number varies greatly depending on who is doing the counting and it always seems to digress into Race vs Social vs FEMA vs Bush. But for the sake of argument, I'll go with the conservative estimate of 1,100

So, just taking these 4 events we see:
2,752 + 2,600 + 329 + 1,100 = 6,781 Americans are dead
Their deaths are directly related to either the incompetence or premediation of the current administration. They keep claiming 'they' are the only ones who can keep us safe. How only 'their' war on terror is stoping the brown skinned, strange god worshipping, hating our freedoms, wanna blow myself and everyone else up terrorists from our shores. Is there ANYONE out there who still believes these lies? Is there anyone who doesn't see that this administration and their neo-con, fundie backers are the main cause behind the religious and political terrorism? Oh, and this little war? Its costing us $185,185.19 per minute.

I am sure there will be someone who will insist that 'we didn't start this' or that since we were attacked 'we had to do something'. Short answers - ya, we DID start this, and no, we didn't have to do 'something' as stupid as invade a country. We COULD have done 'something' like catching Osama Bin Ladden and tracking down his network of terrorists and, more importantly, his financial backers.

But what did we get? We got sound bites from a dry drunk, wannabe cowboy. We got stolen elections. We've got the cold, lifeless bodies of our children being shipped in the cargo holds of planes under the cover of darkness so that no one has to see or bear witness to the human cost of this war. We have people more concerned over who will be the next American Idol than they are over the freedoms the Patriot Act has taken away from us.

We have an administration that is currently re-writing laws to grandfather in their illegal activities so that they cannot be brought to trial, ignoring laws he feels infringes upon his 'powers' as president, and do I even need to link to the illegal wiretapping, the harsh bankruptcy laws, the tax breaks to the wealthy, outing of secret agents, etc. And it is pointless of me to point out that the country was in more of an uproar over Clinton getting a blow job (during an economic boom, when America was at least attempting to be a good neighbour and during which no one was killed, although I'm sure Bill was holding his breath when Hillary found out) than they seem to be about over 6 thousand deaths, the lowest SAT scores in 30+ years, the errosion of the middle class, an increase in STDs and the general dumbing down and fattening up of their country.

Maybe its just me, maybe its because I wasn't born here. Maybe its because I grew up understanding that life is not guarenteed but it should be cherished. Maybe its because I have had to stand there while a mother identifies the bomb ravaged body of her husband and son; or a young mother sits silent, rocking her dying child because there isn't enough medicine or food to keep him alive that I see things a bit differently. I've been through this before, it isn't going to be pretty and the government, PARTICULARY THIS GOVERNMENT isn't going to help any of us.

We have to be the ones to do it, my friends. I had pointed out several months ago when my area was flooded how well the towns people worked together to save and protect one another. If you look back on 9/11 you'll see it was the PEOPLE, not the govn't that took control and jumped into the fray to save whomever they could. We STILL celebrate them and think of their heroic and selfless actions . We had individual citizens lining the streets; feeding, clothing, and opening their homes to first responders and victims. Business owners foregoing profits to donate time, merchandise and money to the cause. The citzens of NYC rolled up their sleeves, pausing only to wipe away their tears and flip the bird before getting down to the business at hand.

What did the adminstration do? Bush was reading a book and staring blankly for an extended period of time before being whisked off into a jet and flown around the country. Condi was shopping for shoes as NOLA drowned, Cheney was shooting old men in the face while our children die for their war.

So what is the point of this rather long and meandering post? Accountability, memories, sorrow and hope. Don't allow the administration to continue to do this, don't sit quietly by while your neighbour spouts baseless lies that they parrot from Faux News. Open up your mouths, correct them with the facts, remind them of how far this country has fallen in the last 5 years.

Stop forgetting the lies, stop forgiving the liars.

For those of us who live on EARTH

Never-before-seen pictures, loaned to me by a longtime friend, from Katrina and the aftermath. No, it's not over. I don't care who wants to put their fingers in their ears and sing "La-La-LAAA!", I don't care how Brian Williams (NBC) or the red cross (TLC) want to rewrite the "narrative," I don't give a fuck about the people who can't hang with the "scary"/"downer" parts of reality.

I LIVE HERE. I may never get back to New Orleans, but I will never abandon her. So, y'know, since it's been a WHOLE FUCKING YEAR and THIS SHIT STILL AIN'T RIGHT YET, I'm not going to just "poof!" away when somebody wants to be a child and push the "scary" thoughts away.

There will be more pictures. There will be more words. THIS SHIT IS NOT OVER.

Dumbsfeld On Iraq and America

“As our forces strive to protect civilians, the enemy uses civilians as shields. As our troops strive to obey the laws of warfare, the enemy uses those laws against us. As our troops are held to a standard of near perfection, the enemy is held to no standard at all. And while some argue for tossing in the towel, the enemy is waiting and hoping for us to do just that.” (Story)

------------

“The great story of America is instead one of grit, of determination and victory. And that story is still unfolding. Americans didn't cross oceans and settle a wilderness and build history's greatest democracy, only to run away from murderers and extremists who try to kill everyone they cannot convert and try to tear down what they could never build.” (Story)

What news stories were they trying to suppress when they arrested Mark Karr in Thailand for killing JonBenet Ramsey, because he is not being charged with murder because his DNA doesn't match? And wasn't that an awfully fast DNA test?

Breaking news on Katrina "impostor"

CNN doesn't have it online yet, but they're calling a guy an "impostor" making a "sick, cruel joke" for impersonating a HUD official at the "summit" in NOLA today.

He's not just any impostor, he's one of the guys who did the "presentations" about the World Trade Organization, FTAA, NAFTA and "globalization" and captured their exploits in an interesting documentary. No, I don't know the name of the film yet (searching now) or what the guy's name is, but he's not just any impostor. I hope that somebody got his stunt on tape, because I'd wager that he said something that embarrassed the FUCK out of HANO & HUD.

In other words, he's not just "some guy" and it's not a "joke" --- it's called a PROTEST.

I'll have the facts up here as soon as I can find them online, if I'm not puking too much blood from watching Dumbya in Biloxi, talking about the "pristine beaches" and a "Mississippi renaissance" (I bet they wrote it in phonetics for him).

Personally, I think that the protestors blew their wad too soon --- he's not due in NOLA until this evening, and it would've made a bigger dent if they'd done it in Dumbya's FACE.

UPDATE: It's The Yes Men!!! I knew it!!! 'Bout time! IMDB wouldn't let me copy the picture, but it's the guy in the gold lame' unitard. If you haven't seen "The Yes Men," it'd take way too long to explain. Suffice it to say that The Yes Men have been the protagonists behind some of the most imaginative and subversive protests in the past ten years, all over the globe.

Hell, if I'da known they was comin', I'da baked a cake!

(And as to Dumbya in Mississippi, he can't even finish a sentence or use a microphone properly --- I think that the confusion is setting in for him because he's actually BREAKING A SWEAT.)

Where to now?

Wikipedia says that only (approx.) 22,000 were left in New Orleans during Katrina. They estimate that over a million people escaped the metro and had the means to reach safety.

Somehow, I don't quite believe that. One can look at the pictures of nice, clean-cut, well-groomed, calm people who were evacuated by Army and Air Force planes that FEMA posts on Wikimedia, and one might think that it was well-organized, carried out with efficiency and consideration, and that anyone who couldn't or wouldn't get out was obviously suicidal or simply stupid.

Isn't that nice? How they're rewriting history? Like Rockey, that douchebag from Meraux who went up to D.C. with his fake "FEMA" trailer to lick Dumbya's scrotum on-camera --- if you ask him, all the people who MATTER are doin' JUST FINE, YAH SUH! Meaning, the wealthy white people who were allowed to return to New Orleans before anybody else, THEY'RE doing fine, THEY didn't have any problems with insurance or FEMA or HUD, no, no, certainly not, and well, about those folks in the PROJECTS --- well, hell, they didn't OWN anything anyway, so who cares?!?!

A few badly-staged photo ops (like the one where Dumbya, the National Guard, and about 20 pieces of heavy equipment showed up to make it LOOK like they were DOING something, and then as soon as the press left, the backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, etc. were loaded BACK up onto their trailers and hauled away, with nary a lick of work done) and a few hastily-bribed step-n-fetchits do not a reconstruction make.

And yes, it's smelling just like a step-by-step remake of the ORIGINAL Reconstruction, wherein the Yankee carpetbaggers come down here, make a KILLING off of the natural resources and cheap labor (80% of the "crime" stats in NOLA right now are from all of the "guest workers" that have been imported from Mexico & Central America), and then BAIL OUT just in time to help foment another economic collapse. The Great Depression wasn't JUST because of the Stock Market and the Dust Bowl, kids.

And when they've made all of the money that can be made from raping New Orleans, they'll run again, and they'll leave no infrastructure behind, just like Homeland Security did to the centuries-old planning that New Orleans and Louisiana have ALWAYS had, but THEY came in here to destroy.

You can bitch about that batshit-crazy republicunt PUPPET Ray Nagin all day long, I'm not going to disagree. Even Kathleen lost her shit more than once during the mayhem.

But there have been hurricane survival plans down-pat in Louisiana and New Orleans from time immemorial.
When the Department Homeland Security was created, those arrogant assholes came into NOLA with shitty attitudes of MISSIONARY carpetbaggers, and did away with CENTURIES of planning and survival, in favor of their "official" way of doing things.

But the second before Katrina touched land, those pussies were GONE. Private planes, no waiting, no lines, no fighting thousands of others for the privilege. Homeland Security flat out fucking BAILED.

After they'd destroyed the infrastructure that had always taken care of the locals (especially the POOR locals) they left the municipal and state agencies with NO authority or resources to cover the giant hole that Homeland Security LEFT in all hurricane preparations.

And all of this comes after Dumbya's been slashing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers budget since THE DAY THAT HE HIT OFFICE. Y'know why? 'Cause nobody who can AFFORD to escape a hurricane's wrath NEEDS to care about the levees. Anybody who NEEDS those levees to save their homes and lives, well fuck, those POOR people don't care, now do they?
So, when the shit hit the fan, was New Orleans prepared? Was Louisiana prepared? Fuck no. Because we're ignorant and illiterate? Fuck no.

BECAUSE THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY MADE IT THIS WAY.
They waltzed in here and dismembered every bit of planning, every safety measure, every preparation, and said that THEY knew what to do and how to handle it and everybody else, who'd been doing this shit ALL OF THEIR LIVES could just shut the fuck up and go home.

So, while I generally eschew conspiracy theories, it seems to me that the lack of planning and expertise on the part of Homeland Security could be viewed as having been VERY WELL PLANNED.

What class of people do the republicunts loathe the most?

Any who are not like them or of them.

Meaning, po' folks, folks of color, folks who don't kowtow to the despotic way that they've destroyed our Constitution and our country.

Working-class Democrats who don't cotton to carpetbaggers.

And that's who died. That's who was left in the lurch.

By a token "chocolate" republicunt who RAN for mayor as a "Democrat" because he could never have won as himself --- a REPUBLICUNT PUPPET OF THE RICH WHITES.

By a Texan-in-name-only son of privilege and dry-erase DUI records, a "president" who calls the richest one percent in this country his "BASE."

By a "department" that has no more secured the "homeland" than they have caught Osama bin Laden.

Believe that it's all "accidental" if you must. But don't kid yourself.
This shit was no accident.
And it won't be the last time.

If we allow these cocksuckers to get away with this genocide, then we'll NEVER stop them from committing it again and again as long as they can, towards their ethnic cleansing of the planet.

Hitler, to these guys, THOUGHT SMALL.

Liz sent me this link about how the Corps of Engineers says that the levees are "ready," even if they're not RIGHT. It's a classic example of bureaucratic pass-the-buck, cover-YOUR-ass politics.

Everybody's got an excuse as to why this shit isn't fixed yet.

And then we've got Karl Rove, to distract us with digging up JonBenet's corpse, with gay-bashing, the run-up to invading Iran, and bending us over the gimp barrel at the gas pumps.

Himmeler must be very very jealous.

The depths to which these bigots, these recidivists, these country-club THUGS will sink never cease to amaze me. It's easy to become numbed to this shit, when you see it EVERY FUCKING DAY.

I would never compare news shock to PTSD, but sometimes, it seems very similar.

How many lives do these trust-fund fuckwads have to WASTE before the revolution comes? How many CRIMES do they have to commit before we say, "ENOUGH!"?
How much longer can we wait?

How many more Katrinas will there be?

I think that Liz was the one who sent me the ThinkProgress Katrina Timeline, but then, so did everybody else. Here's the link if you need it.

Oh, and btw, in case you haven't seen "Katrina-dot-com," it ain't whatcha think that it is…

She probably means well, but bragging about the number of hits, and then posting your own ersatz "resume" on the same site with all of that cutesy "gawd" shit and the portraits of the storm's devastation --- opportunism gets more fucked-up every day.

The only small hope that I have for New Orleans at this point is knowing that the locals are not letting this shit go by without protest…

But how much they can change the corruption and graft that the Bush regime encourages has yet to be determined. And it's a very different thing to have outsiders come in and piss taxpayers' money away, when they're supposed to be protecting LIVES, (not their own pocketbooks) and apparentlly are completely unwilling to learn a damned thing about this city or how it actually functions. What will it take to bust these fuckers, once and for all? What will it take to free what's left of New Orleans from republicunt slavery and greed?

Is this why they let him get away?

It's funny that I had my family check the FBI's most wanted list yesterday afternoon after we watched "On Native Soil", to show them that bin Laden is not wanted for 9/11. Just found this in today's WaPo:
Bin Laden, Most Wanted For Embassy Bombings?

Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is a longtime and prominent member of the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" list, which notes his role as the suspected mastermind of the deadly U.S. embassy bombings in East Africa on Aug. 7, 1998.

But another more infamous date -- Sept. 11, 2001 -- is nowhere to be found on the same FBI notice.

The curious omission underscores the Justice Department's decision, so far, to not seek formal criminal charges against bin Laden for approving al-Qaeda's most notorious and successful terrorist attack. The notice says bin Laden is "a suspect in other terrorist attacks throughout the world" but does not provide details. (read on for why this is so.)

Review: On Native Soil

Court TV's documentary, "On Native Soil: The Documentary of the 9/11 Commission Report" aired again yesterday and I highly recommend it. Not only that, I recommend that you make sure that people who still support Bush and Cheney take a look at it and take off their blinders.

It's not loaded with conspiracy theories. The facts speak for themselves and paint a picture of total incompetance by everyone, and I mean everyone. I defy anyone to watch it without crying. It includes a great deal of testimony from the 9/11 Commission, which as you remember was fought against by this administration. When you watch the documentary, you will see why.

Of course, the documentary mentions more than a few times that the last 2 administrations were responsible for the attacks and that's ok by me except I would have said the last 4 administrations had a lot to do with it. This is not the definitive 9/11 documentary, yet it is pretty fair. It's also available on DVD. You will not feel safe after watching it. Our government on all levels is more dangerous than any terrorists.

It will be aired again on
Friday, September 1 @ 9:00 p.m. ET/PT
Sunday, September 10 @ 6:00 p.m. ET/PT

There is some interesting stuff about the documentary and the education guide here.

The last thing we need is another disaster

SEPT. 19, 2001
"I am glad to reassure the people of New York and Washington, D.C., that their air is safe to breathe and their water is safe to drink." - Christie Whitman, U.S. EPA administrator

Oh I am so sick of reporting that rescue workers and New Yorkers are still sick and dying from breathing the air in the city after 9/11. But the situation is still raging on and again is in the Newsday. "...a U.S. Geological Survey study, which found that the dust was as caustic as drain cleaner. That study was not disclosed to the public until February 2002." Downtown workers in many cases did not wear respirators and OSHA rules were not enforced. The city knew that there would be trouble and had the risk assessed, knowing the shit would hit the fan and asked FEMA to cover the costs of claims that insurance wouldn't cover. Fat chance.

Back in April, according to this NY Times story, the debate was still raging about the fatal air in the city when a detective died most likely due to the air at the WTC after the attack. I blogged about it and linked to several other blog posts concerning the air quality and the coverup. A year ago in New York Magazine, when referring to Whitman's assurances that the air was safe in NYC after 9/11/01, said "the EPA still hadn’t completed testing for mercury, cadmium, lead, dioxin, PAHs, or PCBs," when the statement was issued. From the New York article:
Here, today, is what we know about the dust and air at ground zero: It contained glass shards, pulverized concrete, and many carcinogens, including hundreds of thousands of pounds of asbestos, tens of thousands of pounds of lead, mercury, cadmium, dioxins, PCBs, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs. It also contained benzene. According to a study done by the U.S. Geological Survey, the dust was so caustic in places that its pH exceeded that of ammonia. Thomas Cahill, a scientist who analyzed the plumes from a rooftop one mile away, says that the levels of acids, insoluble particles, high-temperature organic materials, and metals were in most cases higher in very fine particles (which can slip deep into the lungs) than anyplace ever recorded on earth, including the oil fires of Kuwait.
With the air quality debate still raging on five years later, it's very likely that the levee issue in New Orleans will go on and on and on. Federal agencies, local agencies, state agencies... still all messed up. The Army Corps of Engineers are worried about the levees while FEMA says that the levees are storm ready. With all the money that was wasted by FEMA, they could have completely rebuilt the levees. It's no wonder that Iraq and Afghanistan are in chaos. Our government agencies don't know their asses from their elbows. God help us.

It's the INFRASTRUCTURE... stupid

Say THAT 10 times fast!

O.K. -- I have 2 stories here, maybe related, maybe not -- Help me decide if they are. I just read this story over at crooksandliars (via rawstory)
Experts warn U.S. is coming apart at the seams

"The American Society of Civil Engineers last year graded the nation "D" for its overall infrastructure conditions, estimating that it would take $1.6 trillion over five years to fix the problem."

"I thought [Hurricane] Katrina was a hell of a wake-up call, but people are missing the alarm," said Casey Dinges, the society's managing director of external affairs."

President Bush, asked about the problem during a public question-and-answer session in an April visit to Irvine, Calif., cited last year's enactment of a comprehensive law reauthorizing highway, transit and road-safety programs.
"Infrastructure is always a difficult issue," Bush acknowledged. "It's a federal responsibility and a state and local responsibility. And I, frankly, feel like we've upheld our responsibility at the federal level with the highway bill."

"In 2005, the Bush administration passed through Congress a $286.4 billion transportation bill, the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act – A Legacy for Users. The purpose of the legislation was supposedly to provide funding for federal highways and transit programs."

So -- Now it's up to the state and local folks to take their responsibility. In essence -- here's the money, now you go fix it, right? So, on the state level, I guess the governor would apply for the funds needed for INFRASTRUCTURE in their respective state. Then, I suppose you would hire someone (in the private sector) to fix it.

What do you think about this accusation from a whistleblower regarding the way a certain governor is updating their state's INFRASTRUCTURE?

A $491 million public-financing deal promoted by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush as a boon to commuters actually paves the way for shipping more cheap goods from China to the North American marketplace, charges a whistleblower.

Sounds NAFTAish to me, doesn't it?

You know my interest in trying to figure out if NAFTA is a good thing or a bad thing. Well, I'm beginning to think it might be one of the biggest scams going!

An Ex-CSX Transportation employee is the whistleblower here.

"CSXT is positioned to receive millions in the deal. The deal in Florida amounts to providing CSXT with a public subsidy. Money from the public purse will position the railroad company as a major freight carrier throughout Florida, transporting cargo containers filled with cheap goods coming into the NAFTA marketplace from China."

This wistleblower believes this bill was being used to provide a public subsidy for upgrading freight railroads such as CSXT on taxpayer dollars.

"What the federal government plans to do is to buy up unused and aging rail lines all across the country and to use taxpayer dollars to pay for upgrading the infrastructure. What is left unsaid is that the railroad freight companies CSX will get priority over mass transit for the use of the new rail lines."

...and he also claims that "CSXT plans to over-charge the government for upgrading and maintaining rail lines".

What's your take on this? I have a feeling we are going to be bombarded (distracted) with the word INFRASTRUCTURE for a long time to come.....

Oh, BTW --

"Even today, Nelson's allegations remain emotionally charged. His allegations concerning CSXT overcharges involve the management of CSXT while John Snow, former U.S. secretary of treasury, was still the CEO of CSXT. Nelson maintained to WND that John Snow was nominated and sworn-in as secretary of the treasury "while he was still under investigation for the allegations I have been making ever since 1993 of what I believe are CSXT overcharges and fraud continuing even today."

"Described by the D.C. Examiner as "one of the most aggressive marketers of radio frequency identification chips," Florida-based VeriChip is lobbying the Pentagon to implant microchip IDs under the skin of 1.4 million US troops.

"The subcutaneous microchips known as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips would ostensibly allow the Pentagon to track every soldier, althought the reason given is to store a person's ID and medical history, replacing the metal "dog tag" IDs and reminding students of history of the Roman era "tesserae," which "marked" slaves during the Roman Empire.

"Christians, of course, are reminded of the so-called "Mark of the Beast," which has been touted as another road marker in the march towards a One World Dictatorship.

"Verichip is "in discussions” with the Pentagon, according to the DC Examiner."

If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything. Mark Twain --Notebook, 1894

Remember a few days ago when we watched

this unbelievable video of our POTUS,
and we all thought he was on drugs?

Well after reading this story at kos,Why Bush Can't Talk: It's not the drugs, and it's not senility,

I think this author may be correct:

"Bush isn't senile, or drug addled. He's a lying asshole. And it's hard work. Only truly gifted and intelligent sociopaths like Rove and Cheney can rattle it off. Bush can't."

a welcome distraction

No, babysitting isn't my favorite thing to do, but when the kid's this one, I make exceptions.

The Katrina stuff is tearing me up. There's so much to post about, there's still SO much yet to be done, that may never get done, or done properly. But for today, all I had to do was play.

Not trying to justify anything, just trying to remember that ALL of life isn't as evil and horrific as the mass murders that happened last year.

For a minute, anyway.

And Stinkeye sent me a very good, if not surprising, link --- State Farm is now doing to Mississippi what they did to Louisiana for DECADES (before they pulled out of the state re: homeowner's insurance ALTOGETHER, and stuck it to me and about a hundred thousand OTHER homeowners, back in '99), and I hope to hell that they bust these motherfuckers but GOOD.

(I don't REALLY look old enough to be a GREAT-aunt, do I?)

I'll be back to the "anniversary" soon enough, believe you me, kids. It's the only way to keep this shit from making my head explode --- getting it out before it CLAWS its way out.

How much soda do you drink?

Back in April I put up this post, by nameless cynic, He said:

"You see, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has acknowledged that benzene, a cancer-causing chemical, has been found in soft drinks at levels that far exceed the amount considered safe for drinking water."

Today, I came across another Benzene/Soda article at rawstory
Coca-Cola Co. was sued Friday as part of an effort to force soft drink makers to eliminate ingredients in their products that can form cancer-causing benzene.

Were you following the ban on coke and pepsi in India this past month?

And, it seems that students are protesting against this in the UK also

And whattayaknow Coca-cola has bought its way onto the good side of the Bush administration

What IS in that "Secret Recipie" which is locked away somewhere in a vault that only 3 people know about?

Point: Don't Marry Career Women
Counterpoint: Don't Marry An Asshole.

By Michael Noer, Forbes Magazine: not reprinted here with permission.

How do women, careers and marriage mix? Not well, say social scientists.

By Jaye Ramsey Sutter, J.D. BlondeSense
How do women, careers, and helpless men mix? Not well, says this little black duck
.

Guys: A word of advice. Marry pretty women or ugly ones. Short ones or tall ones. Blondes or brunettes. Just, whatever you do, don't marry a woman with a career.

Gals: A word of advice. Marry handsome men or ugly ones. Short ones or tall ones. Blonds or brunettes. Just, whatever you do, don't marry a man with no sense of shared responsibilities.

Why? Because if many social scientists are to be believed, you run a higher risk of having a rocky marriage. While everyone knows that marriage can be stressful, recent studies have found professional women are more likely to get divorced, more likely to cheat, less likely to have children, and, if they do have kids, they are more likely to be unhappy about it. A recent study in Social Forces, a research journal, found that women--even those with a "feminist" outlook--are happier when their husband is the primary breadwinner.

Why? Because he just doesn't get it. If he doesn't get it and get to counseling, then get the hell out. You didn't marry him so you would have to clean up after him, you didn't marry him to compete about who has the higher salary. You didn't marry him because you needed to marry him. You married him for the same reasons you stay married to him, because you found someone who is your partner and who wants you to excel at being yourself. Why be married to someone who isn't willing to cook, clean, and raise the kids? Why is his job more important?

Not a happy conclusion, especially given that many men, particularly successful men, are attracted to women with similar goals and aspirations. And why not? After all, your typical career girl is well-educated, ambitious, informed and engaged. All seemingly good things, right? Sure…at least until you get married. Then, to put it bluntly, the more successful she is the more likely she is to grow dissatisfied with you. Sound familiar?

Or is it that if she is as successful as you or more so you grow dissatisfied with her. Is she kicking your ass because you won't get off of it? Can't compete? Her happiness and well being got you down?

Many factors contribute to a stable marriage, including the marital status of your spouse's parents (folks with divorced parents are significantly more likely to get divorced themselves), age at first marriage, race, religious beliefs and socio-economic status. And, of course, many working women are indeed happily and fruitfully married--it's just that they are less likely to be so than non-working women. And that, statistically speaking, is the rub.

Who gives a shit about everybody else? If you stopped growing you are boring. If you can't share the responsibilities of raising children and keeping house, then why stay married to you?

To be clear, we're not talking about a high-school dropout minding a cash register. For our purposes, a "career girl" has a university-level (or higher) education, works more than 35 hours a week outside the home and makes more than $30,000 a year.

To be really clear, you either want to be married to an undereducated woman who makes her own clothes out of potato sacks, is barefoot, pregnant, or you want to be married to a blow up doll.

If a host of studies are to be believed, marrying these women is asking for trouble. If they quit their jobs and stay home with the kids, they will be unhappy (Journal of Marriage and Family, 2003). They will be unhappy if they make more money than you do (Social Forces, 2006). You will be unhappy if they make more money than you do (Journal of Marriage and Family, 2001). You will be more likely to fall ill (American Journal of Sociology). Even your house will be dirtier (Institute for Social Research).

Marrying a man like you would be trouble. Why don't you quit your job and stay home with the kids if it is so important. May be it is so important that it looks like a job for a man if we follow your reasoning. Yeah, making more money than you would mean that you are not only not living up to your full potential but you are not carrying your own weight. Yes, I would get sick if I lived with someone like you and yes, the house would be dirtier if you didn't pick up after yourself and mop, and vacuum, and cook, and clean the kitchen, the bath, the closets, mow the yard, wash the cars and keep them running. Ya, think?

Why? Well, despite the fact that the link between work, women and divorce rates is complex and controversial, much of the reasoning is based on a lot of economic theory and a bit of common sense. In classic economics, a marriage is, at least in part, an exercise in labor specialization. Traditionally men have tended to do "market" or paid work outside the home and women have tended to do "non-market" or household work, including raising children. All of the work must get done by somebody, and this pairing, regardless of who is in the home and who is outside the home, accomplishes that goal. Nobel laureate Gary S. Becker argued that when the labor specialization in a marriage decreases--if, for example, both spouses have careers--the overall value of the marriage is lower for both partners because less of the total needed work is getting done, making life harder for both partners and divorce more likely. And, indeed, empirical studies have concluded just that.

In other words, she doesn't need to be the only person in the house to wash your dishes. She could wash fewer dishes if she left you. If you want to be married in a traditional marriage, get a mail order bride and make sure that like slaves in the ol' south, you don't teach her how to read.

In 2004, John H. Johnson examined data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation and concluded that gender has a significant influence on the relationship between work hours and increases in the probability of divorce. Women's work hours consistently increase divorce, whereas increases in men's work hours often have no statistical effect. "I also find that the incidence in divorce is far higher in couples where both spouses are working than in couples where only one spouse is employed," Johnson says. A few other studies, which have focused on employment (as opposed to working hours) have concluded that working outside the home actually increases marital stability, at least when the marriage is a happy one. But even in these studies, wives' employment does correlate positively to divorce rates, when the
marriage is of "low marital quality."

You are making this harder than it is. When he makes more money, they hire help. When she works and he makes less, contributes less financially and domestically, women say, "Shit. I can make it on my own."

The other reason a career can hurt a marriage will be obvious to anyone who has seen their mate run off with a co-worker: When your spouse works outside the home, chances increase they'll meet someone they like more than you. "The work environment provides a host of potential partners," researcher Adrian J. Blow reported in the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, "and individuals frequently find themselves spending a great deal of time with these individuals."

Could it be that a wife might leave home with the milkman, the mailman, the repairman, her doctor, her lawyer, her lawn man? May be if you leave her locked up in the house all day with her children and don't see that she is slowly losing her mind or that she and her women friends are leading a rebellion against the tyranny of traditional men you don't deserve to be married to anyone but a blow up doll tied to a vacuum cleaner.

There's more: According to a wide-ranging review of the published literature, highly educated people are more likely to have had extra-marital sex (those with graduate degrees are 1.75 more likely to have cheated than those with high school diplomas.) Additionally, individuals who earn more than $30,000 a year are more likely to cheat.

So you are giving up your job to stay home with the kids and clean the house for the sake of the marriage?

And if the cheating leads to divorce, you're really in trouble. Divorce has been positively correlated with higher rates of alcoholism, clinical depression and suicide. Other studies have associated divorce with increased rates of cancer, stroke, and sexually-transmitted disease. Plus divorce is financially devastating. According to one recent study on "Marriage and Divorce's Impact on Wealth," published in The Journal of Sociology, divorced people see their overall net worth drop an average of 77%.

No, men see their disposable income increase, unless they are of course buying new breasts and cars for their secretaries who see more of your husband than you do because after you work all day, cart the kids to this practice or that game, clean up the house, workout that plan for world domination, it is really difficult to put on that merry widow underwear and turn him on. Women after divorce are more likely to lose income, live with children in poverty, experience more violence and crime, live in worse housing, have no health insurance, and take men to court to pay to support their children. Women love the freedom that divorce gives them. More time to go to the spa and eat out every night.

So why not just stay single? Because, academically speaking, a solid marriage has a host of benefits beyond just individual "happiness." There are broader social and health implications as well. According to a 2004 paper entitled "What Do Social Scientists Know About the Benefits of Marriage?" marriage is positively associated with "better outcomes for children under most circumstances," higher earnings for adult men, and "being married and being in a satisfying marriage are positively associated with health and negatively associated with mortality." In other words, a good marriage is associated with a higher income, a longer, healthier life and better-adjusted kids.

A word of caution, though: As with any social scientific study, it's important not to confuse correlation with causation. In other words, just because married folks are healthier than single people, it doesn't mean that marriage is causing the health gains. It could just be that healthier people are more likely to be married.

Or it could be that I will miss the minutes it took me to flush your writing down the toilet for the rest of my life wondering how I could have possibly given a shit about what you and Forbes, the new marriage counselor and simpatico of the working woman. Fuck you and those shitty studies you have been reading. Look up from your reading and pick up your underwear and make dinner. May be you will find an adult woman to actually talk when you are doing the dishes and she is drying them.

Behaviour detection squads

I just finished reading 1984, I mean I just finished reading this article about ‘Spot’ teams spying on airline passengers -- it just FELT like a chapter right out of 1984.

I don't fly often because I really do not want to; OK, OK -- I'm afraid to fly. I will do it if I absolutely have to, but I usually need a Xanax or two, a couple of bloody Mary's and someone to peel me off of the airport floor and pour me into my seat.
At least I don't look anxious or nervous. Now, if I were to board a plane without those confidence boosters, I would be hauled off in a second for questioning.

"In particular, officers are trained to recognise concealed emotion, such as fear or anxiety. These so-called “micro-facial expressions” appear on a person’s face for 1/25th of a second. “They are so fast, that unless you’ve been trained you don’t see them,”

Next time you fly, beware of those facial expressions -- you never know.

Felix, You're An Embarrasment to Virginia

Dear Senator Allen:

I am appalled at the comments you made recently to young Mr. Siddarth while campaigning in the southern part of the state. I suppose you thought your comments, referring to him as a monkey, were funny. However, it strikes me as more than a little odd that you would have made the instantaneous assumption, merely because Mr. Siddarth is a person of color, he must not be American. As I am sure you know by now, indeed Mr. Siddarth is not only American, but he was born and raised in Virginia. Which, I believe, is more than you can claim, having been born and raised in California.

While I am pleased that you have (finally) seen fit to reach out to Mr. Siddarth and apologize in person, in my view it is too little, too late. When you said those hateful things to Mr. Siddarth, you showed what was truly in your heart. And it ain't a pretty picture.

Very Truly Yours,

Look Who's Taking A Vacation

As you know, Bush is not really a Texan, let alone a cowboy (doesn't ride horses) or a rancher (doesn't own livestock). He's really a New Englander, but his preference for bad manners makes him unsuitable for the upper crust in the northeast. He opted for a faux cowboy meets Texas oilman persona thus insulting the intelligence of two Texas traditions in one. But hey, that's Texas' problem if folks there actually buy his 'down home bubba' act (although I think most people have caught on).

Dubya prefers to prepare for the climate in the afterlife in the extreme heat of his faux ranch in Crawford. His family enjoys the compound by the sea at Kennebunkport, Maine. This weekend Dubya and Jenna will be making a rare appearance in Maine for a fishing trip with Bush I on the ironically named boat, Fidelity III. Where is Laura? We haven't heard very much from Daddy Bush since his son screwed up the entire world and set America back 500 years by being the contrary son. I am secretly hoping that Dubya gets a good kick in the pants from his father.

Read this piece on Family Time in Maine for more

UPDATE: We don't know if Bush I kicked Bush II's arse, but a war widow did when she met with Dubya yesterday. Read about it.

UPDATE SAT: 700 protesters came within a half mile of the Bush compound in Kennebunkport. A Bush spokesperson said, "As the president has said, Americans are free to protest."

"REAL Women of Canada" are putting up a fight

If anyone is interested in what women are fighting about in Canada, check out the latest battle going on in the blogosphere up north.

A group called
REAL Women of Canada and similar pro-Conservative Internet blogs, have signed onto a campaign to eliminate
Status of Women, Canada which is a "Trudeau-era federal agency that promotes women's equality and advancement".

Here is the message that is being widely discussed and supported among some in the Conservative Internet community:

“Like typical radical feminists, they have decided that they speak for all women, and they only consult those groups and women that agree with their agenda,” says an entry on the Big Blue Wave blog from Suzanne, who does not give her last name.

"So it's a bunch of radical feminist bureaucrats consulting radical feminists to hear what they want to hear to promote more radical feminism on my dime.”

Says blogger Steven Janke of Angry in the Great White North: “Any women's group that does not subscribe to a ‘woman as the victim' view is likely to leave empty-handed if it were to ask for funding.”

"REAL Women of Canada's objectives include promoting equality. The organization, which has not received federal funding for several years, is also against abortion and same-sex marriage. It advocates a “Judeo-Christian” understanding of marriage and family life."

Here is a comment from the Real Women website:

"In order to offset this national feminist effort to protect feminist control in Canada, it would be appreciated if you would write immediately to the Prime Minister, relevant Members of his Cabinet (list below), and your MP and the opposition leaders who are all being inundated with letters to support feminist policies and funding of the Status of Women."

The group also has a problem with the letters that support of Status of Women: "letters pouring in to the Prime Minister and his Cabinet and individual MPs from across the country expressing concerns about the disbandment of the Status of Women."

They are upset with the theme of these letters:

"shelters for abused women and children protect them from the violence." (No mention of the studies which indicate that half of domestic violence is instigated by the women.)

OK STOP RIGHT HERE PLEASE

I have to ask: what does the term 'radical feminist' mean?

If it means a woman that would despise a group like REAL women, then I guess I am a radical feminist. Would you call those of us that hang out at Blondesense, radical feminists? Just curious....

DON'T FORGET. This is NOT over yet.

Special thanks to Jesus' General. (I don't remember where I found the Chertoff toon, and the rotten-refrigerator "Free Food" pic is mine from Halloween of '05. And yes, I tried to fill-in the spray-paint text where the flash washed it out, and look how well I did that.)

A LOTTO TROUBLE

How stupid is this woman? How did she get to be a bookkeeper?
She stole $2.3M from her employers over 3 years to pay for her $6,000/day lottery addiction.
She has nothing to show for it.

Grow Up America

• The Morning After Pill, or Plan B will now be available without a prescription to women over 18. Naturally different groups have all sorts of objections and "what if's". The important thing is that adult women can make their own decisions and it's no business of the government who is doing what. Now we will wait and see if the abortion rate goes down. I hope so.

• A school in Canton, Ohio realized that their abstinence only sex education classes were a flop when 13% (65 students) of one high school's female students were pregnant last year. Not only that, 104 of the 586 babies born to Canton residents in Aultman Hospital and Mercy Medical Center had mothers between the ages of 11 and 19.

• Not sure how accurate this story is, but the US' insistence that abstinence education be a part of the spending to fight HIV/AIDS in African countries is highly criticized. Last year there were 2.7 million new infections.

• Liberals aren't having enough babies say Syracuse University professor Arthur Brooks. The conservatives are having more babies and that is why we are losing elections.

• There is a new method devised to extract a stem cell from an embryo without harming it. This does not solve the debate however as a whole new can of worms is opened.
Ironically the President and the Vatican have declared that "the promise of stem cells should not be realized at the expense of human life, even in its most nascent stages." There is more here.

An Interesting Item Wherein My Divorce Is Finally Explained

It was NOT the fact that the ex-husband was a slug who hasn't made a decent financial decision in his life. It was NOT the fact that he kept me perpetually in debt. It was NOT the fact that he followed his little soldier wherever it led him. It was NOT the fact that he couldn't finish anything he started, whether it was college, or the military, or building a house.

No, no, actually it was the fact that he married a career woman that doomed our marriage to failure. He shoulda married himself a simpering little fool who said "yes, dear, whatever you say," or "no, dear, I don't think so either." Then, apparently, our marriage would have survived.

I just don't even know what to say that a magazine like Forbes would publish an article like this. Apparently it was published first as a stand alone piece, although Forbes has since paired the article with a response from another of its columnists as a counterpoint. We've come a long way, ladies, umm hmm.

Hat Tip to Shakespeare's Sister for this one. You should go read her most excellent thoughts on the article.

SAVE THE DATE: Aug. 28th -- The Nat'l Geographic Channel

"Despite the best efforts of the Pentagon to keep the lid on, the story of Able Danger -- the controversial secret military intelligence program that purportedly identified five active al-Qaeda cells and four of the 9/11 hijackers more than a year before the worst terror attacks ever on American soil -- continues to make news

The latest wrinkle is a nasty public spat between the National Geographic Channel, which plans to broadcast "Triple Cross: Bin Laden's Spy in America" on Aug. 28, and author Peter Lance, whose new book forms the basis of the documentary."

"Lance further states that his book also contains evidence that Patrick Fitzgerald (of later Scooter Libby/Valerie Plame fame) covered up key al-Qaeda intelligence in 1996, when he was then an assistant U.S. attorney in New York. To Lance, Fitzgerald was "one of the....."

Blogwhoring Thursday

Last week, our dear friend The Fat Lady Sings reached her one year blog anniversary. Please show her some love, belated though it might be. And for those of you who haven't been to her site or don't read her regularly, I recommend her blog highly. She's got one powerful voice.

Now THAT'S a funeral!!

China acts on funeral strippers

Chinese villages are being told to end the practice --
Five people have been detained in China for running striptease send-offs at funerals, state media say.

"Striptease used to be a common practice at funerals in Donghai's rural areas to allure viewers," Xinhua agency said.

"Local villagers believe that the more people who attend the funeral, the more the dead person is honoured."

It seems officials want to put an end to this, so now "funeral plans have to be submitted in advance"

AND

officials have also said residents can report "funeral misdeeds" on a hotline, earning a reward for information.

WELL NOW! -- I guess they mean business

In Other "Flat Earth" News

The US government has eliminated Evolutionary Biology as an acceptable college major, at least if you're poor and need government backed loans and grants. Oh sure, the Department of Education says the omission was "inadvertant" and a "clerical error". (I guess, technically, if the major was deleted because of pressure from the fundies, you really could call it a "clerical" error.)

If you believe the deletion was a mistake, I have a bridge to sell you.

Random Spewings

Well, I'm in a bit of a funk this morning.

I'm rather amused that if Jesus exists and did return to our present time he would immediately be hit with racial/terrorist profiling and either imprisoned in Gitmo or shot.

I'm extremely upset that Marines who have already served 2, 3 and 4 tours of duty are being forcibly recalled. And we all know that the next step would have to be a draft. And my brother STILL cannot get out as he was stop-gapped after his last enlistment ended (he's been in 20 years now, right out of school and into the Army).

I am amazed that only 25% of the population realizes that the USA is in more danger now than it was prior to 9/11. Which brings me to my next rather irksome realization:

I come from an extremely mixed family (socially, religiously, nationality) Many of my parents generation are/were extraordinarily religious (ie. mennonite, missionary, etc). I've noticed that my generation have, as a rule, broken that chain and tend to be more 'open-minded' about a lot of things. This is especially true in politics. Almost without fail every member of my parents generation (most of whom were conscientious objectors during Vietnam and Korea) are in favour of the war, stating that 'something had to be done'.

When my generation countered that 'fine, do something but why not to Osama instead of another nation that had nothing to do with 9/11' some of them gave blank stares, some insisted that (yes STILL) Saddam was the one behind 9/11. (Oddy enough the more fundamental their religious beliefs, the more they insisted this lie was the truth, despite our explaining the facts to them). When asked about Katrina and its aftermath most fell quite (the reunion was in North Carolina, lots of friends and family in that area) and most had NO IDEA that major infrastructures, homes and huge swaths of land remained in the same condition as a week after the waters receded. Many didn't even realize that the evacuees had not and probably never would be able to return to homes that not only were no longer there, but that the govn had 'reclaimed' that land as it was now considered 'unliveable'.

Yes, my family reunions are heaps of fun, /sarcasm. Luckily the children were outside playing while most of this was going on, although my 11 yo came in with her 4 yo niece to get some watermelon and joined in the convo for a few minutes. She floored her grandparents and the older generation with her knowledge of world events as seen through the eyes of a child, and luckily her language is a lot 'cleaner' than mine would have been.

Traitor/Maggot Du Jour

This is Rocky Vaccarella. (Found video online, but no stills yet.) You can even read his "blog" of his "mission" to road-trip to D.C. and see him meet Dumbya (and then fellate him on-camera) and tell Dumbya et al that they're doing a "heckuva job," just don't "forget" about us in South Louisiana.

While he stabs the state of Louisiana in the back and blames THEM for the FEMA money not showing up yet.

From what I've seen, despite the fact that Rocky claims to have lost his home and job, he still seems pretty financially flush to me. He bought his OWN "FEMA-style" (actually, it's twice the size of a FEMA trailer) fifth-wheel camper and drove up to D.C. Some sources cited on Google say that it IS the FEMA trailer that Rocky's family was issued (and yet THOUSANDS of black people STILL haven't received trailers or been allow to inhabit the hundreds of trailers that are going unused), but that can't be true, seeing as how FEMA's been posting fliers all over the state, especially in "'hood" areas and other low-income areas, stating that "YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU! DO NOT MOVE YOUR FEMA TRAILER ANYWHERE ELSE OR SELL IT! THIS TRAILER BELONGS TO THE U.S. GOVERNMENT AND CANNOT BE MOVED BY ANYONE OTHER THAN FEMA/U.S. GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS." Oh, and as I already said, it's TWICE AS BIG as the standard FEMA trailer in Louisiana. How did Rocky get special dispensation from FEMA, if it's THEIR trailer?

And of course, this "conveniently"-timed little passion play comes just at the anniversary of Katrina, so that the white people in this country can go back to their apathy and their reality shows, believing this cajun-wannabe motherfucker that "everything's goin' GREAT!" and that nobody in Louisiana needs or deserves any more help. Same for the entire Gulf South.

I'm sure that somebody will accuse me of wearing a tinfoil hat because I smell a huge load of steaming horseshit smeared ALLLLLLL over this little chest-thumping, drum-banging hypocritical PUBLICITY STUNT. Lemme tell you about St. Bernard Parish, from whence Rocky hails...

In a strip mall in Chalmette, the St. Bernard Parish Republicunt Party headquarters are just DIRECTLY UPSTAIRS of the local chapter of the KU KLUX KLAN. Coincidence?

I worked many a week with mentally and physically disabled clients of a "job-training" program in and around St. Bernard, Orleans, St. James, St. John and Jefferson Parishes the last year that I was in New Orleans. The racism and cleaving to catholic-church-approved ignorance there in St. Bernard is thicker than the Vatican itself. Even when the black person being harrassed is mentally disabled, the outright bigots don't care, they see that as an example of "inferior genetics." As if they could SPELL genetics.

Now, I've met quite a few decent people in St. Bernard Parish, too. I've met Shriners who bent over backwards for poor and disabled children of all colors. I've met cops and firefighters there who did their jobs with no exceptions whatsoever for race, religion, or any other arbitrary discrimination.

But I also know an assload of people like Rocky. They might have lost every material possession in Katrina and Rita. But they had plenty upon which they could fall back in times of crisis, and because of that, have NO SYMPATHY WHATSOFUCKINGEVER for anybody who DIDN'T. They figure, if somebody is a "welfare queen" or "retard," or some other "drain on the system," or "parasite on the gubmint" --- then they DESERVE to die, starve, and suffer, because they're too "lazy" to provide for themselves. These people sound exactly like my Psycho Sister, who hates my guts because I'm on Social Security Disability & SSI. They figure that anybody who can't "pull their weight" should either live & die with their families (who should have to provide for them) or just CEASE TO EXIST. Y'know who else thought like that? You know. With the ugly little moustache and the fear of semites, gypsies and gays.

Now, I don't know enough about this Rocky to swear in court that he's a flaming bigot republicunt who MOCKS THE DEATHS AND SUFFERING OF EVERY PERSON OF COLOR in Orleans, Jefferson & St. Bernard Parishes. But I can smell the horseshit from here. Rocky's a tool. He thinks that fellating Dumbya as a self-appointed "representative" of Katrina survivors makes him a "PATRIOT." He actually said, on camera, that he wishes that Dumbya could have FOUR MORE YEARS.

I'll tellya why Rocky's there. I'll tellya why this was a "news item."

It's so that everybody will forget about the dead, dying, suffering and stranded BLACK PEOPLE of Katrina. It's to reassure the heartless cunts who wave flags and ignore genocide that it's perfectly okay to forget ALLLLLLLLL about Katrina & Rita and just go back to their fucking NASCAR and American Idol as if their beloved gubmint didn't commit an ATROCITY OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS. Rocky was welcomed into the warm arms of the "president" who loves a man with a beautiful face, because he is THE PERFECT STOOGE TO MAKE IT ALL OKAY AGAIN FOR A PRESIDENT WHO HAS FAILED IN EVERYTHING HE'S EVER DONE.

Rocky went up there to tell Dumbya that he's doing "okay," but to remind America that the white victims of Katrina are "WORKING THEIR WAY OUT OF IT." In other words, "DON'T WORRY ABOUT THOSE WELFARE QUEENS, SUH --- WE'S IS AH'IGHT, DEY DON'T MATTAH!" There was even a study released today, (it was on ABC's World News Tonight today, but I can't find any reference to it on their website) by some university that I've never heard of that says if the government STOPS ALL AID to the disaster zone, then PRIVATE BIDNESS AND PRIVATE CHARITIES WILL PICK UP THE SLACK AND MAKE PEOPLE ALL BETTER FASTER.

TRICKLE-DOWN DISASTER RELIEF.

Y'all think that would work?

Me neither.

Nothing that happens in this country is coincidental or accidental. Not anymore. Thank Rupert Murdoch. Thank Dick Cheney. Even someone who survives the worst natural disaster in our nation's history can turn around and reinforce their racisim by LYING TO THE WORLD for Dumbya's behalf. We're past the rabbit hole, kids. We're living in Bizarro World.

I've seen & heard Dumbya do a lot of racist bullshit, but I've never seen him so effectively (if awkwardly & disingeniously) use a PUPPET to spread that shit before. At least not since Scotty Mac left the White House.

I've got a message for Rocky:

Rocky, I'm glad that you came out of Katrina with enough resources to go on your little road-trip-of-the-damned-and-damned-stupid. I'm glad that your family survived. I'm sorry that St. Bernard Parish basically got wiped off of the fucking map. I'm sorry that the majority of the media never even MENTION St. Bernard, unless they need to put some white people into the montage.

But Rocky, you are a traitor of the worst order. You are a traitor to humanity, you are a traitor to your state and your ancestors, and you are a traitor to your country. You serve the same purpose as "reality" shows, Rocky. You're just a bullshit billboard that's supposed to cover up the real horrors and the true crimes. You're a tool, Rocky, and you and your buddies think that that makes you a hero.

You're not a hero, Rocky, you're an accessory to murder. And I hope that when you go home, if you pass through Orleans, that instead of repeating The White American's Mantra of "Well, if those n*****s weren't so fucking lazy, then they'd have gotten this shit FIXED by now!", that you'll finally realize whom you have betrayed with your little moment in the spotlight. I hope that somehow, someday, it all comes home to you that you are a coward, a thief, and a killer. And I sure as hell hope that it happens soon.

But I'm not holding my breath.

UPDATE: Mentis Fugit and all of the other wonderful commenters have vindicated my initial gut feeling about ol' Rockey. He ain't just a "Katrina Survivor." He's one of the douchebags who occupy that Republicunt Headquarters office above the Klan shop.

Behind the scenes

On Tuesday, August 22, a health care facility in Bradford County, Pennsylvania received a commercial mass-mailing envelope that contained a small quantity of powder. In an abundance of caution, two persons at the facility were decontaminated.

Two other Bradford County sites also reported receiving envelopes containing similar powder. An EIA rapid test conducted by a local lab on the first envelope was weakly positive for botulinum toxin. Samples were sent to the Laboratory Response Network (LRN), the State Health Dept Lab at Lionville, PA, where an initial test for botulinum was "indeterminate."

Final confirmatory tests using a mouse bioassay are in progress. Very early results from the mouse bioassay (at three hours) are negative. Despite the initial lab results, all data suggest this is NOT a terrorist incident. No one exposed to the powder has become ill. The FBI reports no terror threats have been received.

The mailing was part of a promotion by Positive Promotions in NY, sent to health care providers, hospices, home health organizations, and hospitals. The company has instructed individuals to discard these envelopes without opening them, to avoid further confusion.

It didn't mention what SORT of healthcare facilities they were (ie, women's clinics, family practice, nursing homes, etc) but still, keep this in mind when you go the the hospital and the RN is a bit bitchy.

Oh and this was sent out as a Health Alert, which conveys the highest level of importance; warrants immediate action or attention. So in other words, the powder MIGHT be cornstarch or it MIGHT be botulism (Botulinum toxin is the most poisonous substance known.6-7 A single gram of crystalline toxin, evenly dispersed and inhaled, would kill more than 1 million people) but lets not panic just yet.

Actually, I'm surprised the Homeland Security trolls haven't picked up on this just to up the fear factor in the general population. Luckily healthcare workers are notoriously hard to rattle.

Maybe it's John Lennon?

Why does every guy with a long hair and a beard who appears in curtains, on ultrasounds, in food, in rocks, on walls, etc have to be Jesus?

UPDATE From Jesus General:
Is that Jesus or Jim Morrison on a man's shrimp dinner?
Is that an Abu Ghraib prisoner or Jesus in a woman's MRI?
Is that Richard M Nixon giving the V sign or Jesus giving praise to god on a tomato?

Another attack?

CNN reports today that a recent poll shows that 3/4's of respondents believe that bin Laden is planning another attack on the United States. The fear mongering by the administration seems to be working, but it also shows something else- People are not informed.

One of the reasons for the 9/11 attack were the US military bases in Saudi Arabia. Since the US doesn't have troops based there anymore and bin Laden was allowed to escape in Tora Bora and forever more it seems, what reason would he use to attack this time? Let's face it, the Bushistas gave al Qaida everything they wanted.

"Survivor" hopes to divide teams according to race

Just when I thought I had heard it all. I don't watch survivor, but I know millions do, and it is one of the most popular "reality" shows on TV. Wasn't it the first reality show?

This is unbelievable. It may just be a rumor, but it will be interesting to follow the story today.

Here is the site that google led me to. I am sure there will be more references to this story as the day unfolds.

What IS this world coming to....

CONGRESS has the power TO IMPEACH....So what are they waiting for?

Maybe they're waiting for our phone calls. As David Lindorff comments:

"The courts have spoken: this president is a criminal on multiple counts. Now the process moves to our elected representatives in Washington. No member of Congress who is unwilling to hold Bush and his accomplices to account and initiate impeachment proceedings against him for his crimes and violations of the Constitution should be returned to office in November.

Some critics have argued that impeachment is an unnecessary diversion from the task of government, since Bush will be gone in 2008 anyway. These people miss the point that leaving this president's crimes and constitutional affronts unchallenged and unpunished would enshrine his transgressions in the mantle of precedent, allowing the next president and her or his successors to pick up wherever Bush leaves off.

To do that would be to sign the death warrant for American democracy."

GET ON THE PHONE

I don't know what else we can do....

What I remember

I appreciate the fact that y'all are indulging my Katrina-related online mourning. And it's not over yet.

I can't stop thinking about how the Red Cross came out of this shit UNSCATHED, and people are STILL sending them money that's SUPPOSED to go to Katrina survivors.

And I can't forget that the fucking Red Cross waited SIX MOTHERFUCKING DAYS to go into Jefferson, Orleans & St. Bernard Parishes, because THEY DIDN'T WANT TO PISS OFF DUMBYA, who hadn't returned from his FUCKING VACATION YET. SIX GAWDDAMNED DAYS!!! The Salvation Army was in there THE NEXT FUCKING DAY. The day after Katrina hit, the Salvation Army had mobilized their forces, before the State Troopers and U.S. Army and National Guard had locked-down the interstates and Highway 61 to all southeast-bound traffic. The Salvation Army was putting food into people's hands even as the floodwaters surged.

And the fucking Red Cross holed-up in hotels and "rode out the storm." People died while the Red Cross daintily stepped back, for fear of offending the republicunts who sang and danced and ate birthday cake while our Rome burned.

Don't ever forget that.

I'll never forget the shock, of seeing almost every neighborhood that I'd ever lived in, overcome with polluted flood water. I'll never forget the anguish and rage because I didn't get on the road in time and wouldn't even get to the Bonne Carre spillway before I'd have been sent back. I was online through that whole first couple of days, and I didn't do shit. And I can never forget that, either. I should've been in the 8th & 9th wards. And I was sitting here, in the comfort of my little apartment, never once comprehending how bad it would become until it was too late to get down there and do something about it. I wanted to go down there and pull people out, at least get them to Baton Rouge, get them out of that hell. And I didn't.

If Liz & Archie hadn't started the ball rolling, I probably wouldn't have had a clue of what to do, because nobody at the state OR federal levels wanted anybody going into New Orleans to help, surely THEY would have everything covered. At least, that's what they SAID. All I could do was scramble to find someplace where I could be of help. And it still doesn't feel like I did enough. It probably never will. Because every time I see that footage of bodies floating down Claiborne or Rampart, every time that they show the needless carnage and despair at the Convention Center, every time I wonder where my old friends are, the rage, the anguish, the frustration is all right back. Right there. And I don't go searching for them online because I don't want to find out what I probably would. I already lost Barry Cowsill. I can't take another one. I'm too weak for this kind of massive shit.

If this had happened anywhere else in this country, it wouldn't still be in such a state of neglect and incompetence. If this had happened to anyone else in this country, there would have been a plan in place, and there would not have been over a thousand deaths. There wouldn't be an almost unanimous consensus (amongst republicunts, mainly) that "those people" deserved what they got, for not having the money or the means to get out. There wouldn't be mainstream media who dig up the corpses to wave around for ratings, but conveniently forget where George W. Bush was, the whole time that the whole fucking shithouse was exploding.

It still hurts. It probably always will. And this is all, for now, that I can do about it. To try and keep whatever small part of the world that I can reach from forgetting.

New Orleans is not the only place that I've ever lived, or even for the longest span. But it was the first place on this earth where I ever felt at home. And it will always be home to me. Those 12 years changed my DNA. I am a New Orleanian, no matter what redneck shithole I was born in, or what redneck shithole in which I currently reside. And no matter how long it takes, I will get home. That is the only hope that I have at this point, especially considering the rate and the degree at which things are NOT happening.

No-bid contracts all around, but how many people have gone home? 45,000? Not even. Over half a million people left Orleans that week. And close to another million in Jefferson and St. Bernard. And yes, a great many of those were in public housing. Those are the ones that they don't want to come back. Don't let the P.R. fool you, don't believe anything that you're told by any government or any corporation.

This was an ethnic cleansing, and it will forever change the face of this country. At least it damned well better. Because if all the people who cared about New Orleanians then don't care anymore, then what in the hell is the point? If they can forget the crimes committed by our "president," by our government, then what will they fall for next? Who will they forget next? And how many more will die, and then be conveniently allocated to "oh, well" history?

Don't let them forget.

And don't ever stop being pissed about this.

No matter how much the despair and depression push you down, DON'T STOP BEING PISSED.

And never let those fuckers off of the hook.

Don't ever forget.

God's Pajamas?

Ok, I just have to blogwhore this, I cannot possibly outdo this entry:

will say, that fears, doubts and uncertainties at night are a problem, but really more as you hit 40 or so. I'll admit to some late-night panic attacks recently.
So if they sold these in adult size, I would buy them.

And then have sex in them.

GAY sex.

I'm not even gay, but I'd feel obligated.

This, do in rememberance of me.

They held a memorial to the pets lost in New Orleans on Sunday, marching through the Quarter from the episcopal church. I'm at a loss for words. All I can say is that I'm grateful that my cats weren't there when Katrina hit. And all I can think of these days is those fevered weeks afterward, and how, no matter how much we did, it still wasn't enough.

Some of you may remember Andrea, my old friend in New Orleans whose backyard turned into an animal refuge. If you get a chance, visit her site. She's got the low-down on what's really going on in New Orleans and how hard they're fighting to keep New Orleans, even as tropical storms loom almost as precipitously as the Bechtel, Halliburton & Shaw Group "future projects" with their no-bid contracts.

The images from the rescued animals, and those who were lost, are plentiful on the web. What is not so easy to come by is a way to overcome the feelings of loss, confusion, and pain that these images dredge up. Our animals look to us to protect them as they protect and help us. Our animals trust us to always do the right thing for them. And when you see... something like this, you can't get over the feeling that no matter how hard we tried, we have still failed them.

PBS' Nature has a photo gallery of the animals and their rescuers, as well. Heart-wrenching doesn't even touch the tip of the proverbial iceberg. If only Dumbya & Dick had stopped hunting, drinking, and pretending to play the guitar long enough to treat the humans of New Orleans with at least the consideration and concern that the animal rescuers gave to their charges.

We Will Always Be At War

Last night, the husband was Instant Messaging with his friend who is serving in the Army reserve stationed in Mosul, Iraq, on his second tour and expected to stay there for another year and a half. When asked, "So how is it?" our friend said sarcastically, "It's great. You should sign up!" He also said that he sees action every day when he steps out of his air conditioned container called "home". His wife had a baby a few months ago. He has only seen the baby via Email. The son of Chinese immigrants, he considers serving in the Army a job that pays better than what he was making working for a Ford dealer. Not one to really read the news, he isn't up on why he's there and really doesn't think about it. He is just trying to stay alive so that he can come home someday.

According to Mr Bush yesterday, we will always be at war in Iraq, at least as long as he's pretzeldent. He also went on to view anti-war opponents as Democrats who want to pull the troops out before we "Win". How we will know that we have "won" has yet to be determined by the Bush administration.

To show just how of touch this man is, he commented about the American psyche, something of which he hasn't a clue.

“These are challenging times, and they’re difficult times, and they’re straining the psyche of our country. Nobody wants to turn on their TV on a daily basis and see havoc wrought by terrorists.”
Apparently he thinks that the anti-war movement is based solely upon what we see on television. Now exactly which television news is unsupportive of the war? And which television news is showing the toll of the war in pictures? Have you seen dead bodies on the television news? Have you seen Iraq in the news?

Excellent! A chart to keep me CLEAR as to where I am in the blog-o-SPHERE

I thought this chart was a pretty good reference to use for browsing headlines on a big news day. It lists the most popular news sources and places them in various spots on a "left" or "right" style grid. You are all very well read, so I ask your opinion of the author's opinion of their placement. Did he put them where you would?

The site is called Newsprism

Joke for Tuesday.

One hundred women died and went to Heaven.
At the Gate of Heaven, they were stopped by St. Peter.

"Ladies, before we go any further and waste time with paperwork,
I am going to ask you a question to see if you qualify to enter"

said Peter, then asked:

"Those of you who cheated on your spouse, please raise your hand!"

Ninety nine of the women raised their hand.

Peter said:

"Ok Ladies, those of you that raised your hands turn around and go to Hell...
and please take this deaf woman with you!"

A moral dilemma...

This is an oldie, but a goodie, revamped for the overhyped Katrina anniversary:

This morning's paper brings yet another example from our linguistically-challenged president...
"In other words, what the insurgents fear is democracy, because democracy is the opposition of their vision."

Now, something to think about….

Ethics Test

This test only has one question, but it's a very important one.
By giving an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally.
The test features an unlikely, completely fictional situation in which you will have to make a decision.
Remember that your answer needs to be honest, yet spontaneous.
Please scroll down slowly and give due consideration to each line.

You are in New Orleans, during Katrina to be specific.
There is chaos all around you caused by a hurricane with severe flooding.
This is a flood of biblical proportions.

You are a photojournalist working for a major newspaper, and you're caught in the middle of this epic disaster. The situation is nearly hopeless.

Suddenly you see a man floundering in the water.
He is fighting for his life, trying not to be taken down with the debris.
You move closer . .
Somehow the man looks familiar. You suddenly realize who it is.
It's George W. Bush!

At the same time you notice that the raging waters are about to take him under, forever.

You have two options--you can save the life of G.W.Bush or you can shoot a dramatic Pulitzer Prize winning photo, documenting the death of one of the world's most powerful men.

So here's the question, and please give an honest answer:

Would you select high contrast color film, or would you go with the classic simplicity of black and white?

(PROPS: BlondeSense Liz for the "smiling" collage up top, Jesus' General for Republican Jesus, and the Bourbon Street t-shirt picture is mine, from last Halloween.)

UPDATE: Jersey Cynic listed this review of the Spike Lee documentary, and y'all should read it. I don't have HBO, but when this hits video, I am sooooo all over it.

Joke of the Day

A woman and her controlling husband went on vacation to Jerusalem. While they were there, the husband passed away. The undertaker told the wife, "You can have him shipped home for $5,000, or you can bury him here, in the Holy Land , for $150." The woman thought about it and told him she would just have him shipped home. The undertaker asked, "Why would you spend $5,000 to ship your husband home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here and you would spend only $150?" The woman replied, "Long ago a man died here, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead. I just can't take that chance.

Retorts from you men folk out there welcome. (Okay, not welcome, but tolerated.)

Sexual Lyrics Prompt Teens to Have Sex -- A Study Says...

I read this AP Article a few weeks back and have been "discussing" this topic with my hubby, and how it relates to our 3 teens and the music they are listening to. We have also been "discussing" whether or not it's OK to let your teens drink at home, under supervision, taking everyone's keys, etc... He and his friends grew up under this environment, but my friends and I would sneak (ha!) it into the basement -- maybe our parents knew, maybe some didn't. Anyway, we've put that fight, I mean discussion, on hold (still have another year or two I think) and are discussing the effects, if any, of todays lyrics on our kids.

Back to the music -- I definitely think that the above holds true. ESPECIALLY so in the lyrics of the majority of songs playing today. ESPECIALLY when 99% are plugged into their iPods and really hearing the lyrics -- no other distractions. OK, we probably listened to some hot and steamy lyrics at a young age, but most of it went over our heads. We just loved the beat and got into dance'n and yell'n with our friends. I cringe when I see an 8 - 10 year old belting out the lyrics to a Britney song. She probably doesn't know what she is saying, but pretty soon she will.

Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n Roll -- Is it every parent's nightmare? I guess so. I thought I was a pretty cool mom, after all, Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n Roll are MY 3 favorite things!! I guess I wish MY kids could be 'just kids' for a few more years. Do we just give in? EVERYTHING is being done at a younger and younger age. Seems to me that it should be going the other way. If we are living longer and longer, shouldn't we be pacing ourselves a bit?

The only reason I brought this up in a post is because I was just over at SFGate to read some Mark Morford. Check out his latest column!!!!
Devil's Music Made Me Have Sex!
This just in: Raunchy lyrics make teens all hot 'n' bothered. Led Zeppelin sighs

ENJOY!! He sure does have a way of putting it in perspective!

Mexican Invasion Well Underway

Pat Buchanan on Imus this morning:

The nature and character of the invasion is far different than anything that used to happen. 58% of the Mexican people in one survey indicated they believed that the American Southwest belonged actually to Mexico. It was stolen from them. It belongs to them and I think that the Mexican government has a direct program basically to push it’s poor, unemployed, and uneducated into the United States for a variety of purposes. And one of them, in my judgment — in which I believe I documented it in the book — is an attempt at the reconquista they call it, the reannexation of the seven days states of the American Southwest, link linguistically, ethnically and culturally to become as much a part of Mexico is they are a part of America. And I think that is well underway.

The Carlyle Group

Our 401k has been sitting in a money market account for 5 years now, earning squat (.05% interest) because we have been too paranoid to put it back in the 'markets'. (we "lost" 1/2 of it's value a while back -- anyone remember that?). Well, I guess it's time to DO SOMETHING. At this rate, we will never get ahead, nevermind recouping what we lost.

I'm looking for a group of investment professionals I can trust -- since this is an important transaction, I need to feel very confident about investing this (small) amount of money -- it's ALL we have. We're only 15 years away from retiring and still have to put 3 through college. I know we're probably up shits creek without a paddle already, but I still have to take a chance and 'invest' -- right?

SO, what do you think of this group? Have you ever heard of them? Their mission is:

"To be the premier global private equity firm, leveraging the insight of Carlyle's team of investment professionals to generate extraordinary returns across a range of investment choices, while maintaining our good name and the good name of our investors."

(Doesn't that last line make you feel good -- like you're in church or something....it sounds familiar) Anyway, I think I will
check them out!

BTW, does anyone know if they are related to this Carlyle Group? Just wondering.

AND what about this "shocking" story about the Carlyle Group?

WTF?!?!? Is EVERYTHING a CONSPIRACY THEORY?

HOLY SHIT This is getting more ridiculous by the second!!

Thank our goddess above for google! I think I can stop the inquiry now. I just wish I put the 401 in a qualified gold fund like I wanted to 5 years ago. But no.... I couldn't find an 'investment advisor' who would do it for me. Most of them scared me away from doing it because "gold is tricky to invest in--wouldn't recommend it for the little guy" "you'll always make out in the markets, if you're patient" blah blah blah...

I don't know about you folks, but I am getting more and more pissed off about EVERYTHING. I've felt something brewing inside of me the past few days -- you know that feeling when you're about to lose it? I'm trying to keep calm. I have noticed myself starting to rock, on occassion, back and forth, back and forth. Is that good or bad?

Happy fuckin' anniversary

Babs, surrounded by fecal floodwater. No image more appropriate, yes?

Okay, I'm fed the fuck up with the "hype-the-fear!" MSM douchebags who keep bringing up the "anniversary" of Katrina (nobody remembers Rita, for some reason), like it's something to be "celebrated" or dwelled upon & mumbled about so that it can pull up every horrific memory & nightmare that those who survived it ALREADY battle every fucking day.

Louisiana --- New Orleans especially --- doesn't have DICK in the way of psychological or psychiatric services for the poor anymore, and New Orleans doesn't have ANY psychological services what-so-fucking-EVER, so what is the fucking POINT of dredging this shit up, without ONCE "remembering" WHO was to blame for those people dying, those historical neighborhoods (Treme, 9th Ward, Gentilly, etc.) being DESTROYED, or WHY those cocksuckers let those people suffer & die, and then let the RICH WHITE HOMEOWNERS IN THE GATED COMMUNITIES BACK INTO NEW ORLEANS BEFORE ANYBODY ELSE.

A helluva lot of people STILL can't go home. And it makes me puking-blood SICK to hear those lily-white MSM douchebags murmuring with their most obscenely-morbid fake voices of doom about the "trauma" that Katrina & Rita survivors have to deal with every day, yet they keep PLASTERING PICTURES OF THE DEVASTATION ON THE TEE-VEES, without ONCE offering a solution, much less any REASON for the continuing CLUSTERFUCKS that have resulted in almost NO improvement. The Shaw Group, Halliburton & Bechtel have ALL won big-ass no-bid contracts to "repair" (read: tear-down and replace with condos) the destroyed neighborhoods, but do you see a few hundred thousand people getting to go home?

Fuck no.

Not even 45,000 are back, and unlike the pre-Katrina demographics, most of those are RICH AND WHITE AND DIDN'T LOSE *SHIT* TO THAT HURRICANE. Convenient, isn't it?

Thusly, as the MSM vultures ramp-up the trip down memory lane/that avenue of death & misery @ Causeway & I-10, I'm going to post some pictures/images that came out last year as the clusterfuck/mass-murder escalated. Some from here, some from Jesus' General, some from friends (like Oracle w/the below graphic), and some from blogs & sources I've forgotten. It's not enough to just "remember," fake-sympathetic "memorials" don't accomplish shit. Ray "Chocolate City" Nagin and his fireworks display didn't exactly tickle anybody's funnybone. It's not enough to just remember, we have to remember WHY.

Blogger's fuckin' with my head again.

I had just written my first half-way amusing blog post in quite some time, and fuckin' Blogger lost it. They don't let you right-click and copy, highlight and copy, they don't allow you to save your extemporaneously-written posts whatsofuckingever before you hit "publish," and I lost a good 'un. Then I get here to see THIS post, and the one they told me that they'd thrown away is UP! Fuckers.

Nonetheless, here's the point of this second post:

A FIFTY-STATE APB FOR MISSOURI MULE!!!

Haven't been able to find that heifer in 9 days, no e-mail (her modem was supposed to be fixed by now), no returned calls, no returned messages, no phones answered.

So, knowing that she's not nearly as tough & badass these days as she's always been, I'm worried. Liz hasn't heard from her in ages, and I ain't heard hide nor hair in over a week.

Mebbe she's done run off with those sexy carnies from the Missouri State Fair, and she's fine and fit as a fiddle. Mebbe she's converted to Mormonism and she's out in the desert looking for an talking albino salamander. I dunno. But if anybody hears from that hussy, please thwack the hell out of her for me and tell her to send some gawddamned smoke signals once in a while.

We now return you to your regular programming, while I try to figure out why Blogger turned me into the Literary Gimp.

Ranty Aunty Annti's Rules Of The Road

Okay, look, I know that there are billions of things more important than "courtesy" or "civilized behavior" on our nation's highways and byways. I know that there are thousands of people being murdered right this minute by corrupt governments in pointless, illegal wars.

But I have GOT to get a few things off of my chest.

Thusly, here's Annti's Commandments Of The Road:

1. If you go to McDonald's drive-thru and DON'T ALREADY KNOW WHAT THEY SELL THERE, then you're not allowed to use the drive-thru lane. People in Lower Slobovia know the McD's menu by heart, it's not like there's any DIFFERENCE between the menu items, anyway, it's the same crap they've always sold, just with different marketing and packaging. So if you get to the menu board and have to READ THE ENTIRE FUCKING THING before you can bring yourself to make this crucial decision, GET OUT AND GO INTO THE FUCKING BUILDING. And anybody who thinks that it's "cute" or "instructional" to let your SIXTEEN SCREAMING FUCKTARDED KIDS PLACE THEIR OWN ORDERS, then the person in line behind you will then be entitled to drag you out of your Ford Envirostomper and beat you with a tire tool until you are no longer capable of breeding more obnoxious brats.

2. No more SUVs. Especially for 5-foot-tall, 90-pound yuppie bitches who want to feel "tough" by driving three tons of overpriced vehicle that gets about 5 mpg and puts off worse emissions than Dow Chemical. NOBODY but Mormons has enough kids to justify driving anything that fucking big, and they're already cleaning out the USDA coffers by abusing the food stamps, WIC, welfare, Medicare and Medicaid programs, so NO MORE FREEBIES FOR THE MORMONS. And no, they can't have SUVs, either. They want to return to the 18oo's? Let 'em ride a mule-pulled buckboard. Any yuppie scum who need to overcompensate for their short penises, tiny angry-dwarf bodies, lack of parental approval, or the self-loathing that forces them to compare themselves to others via consumerist waste --- well, fuck 'em, let them drive Gremlins and work the rest of it out with their therapists.

3. NO MORE CITY TRUCKS. Y'all know the ones that I mean. Anybody who puts too much chrome, oversized shiny rims, ground effects, air dams or scoops, or sparkly paint & airbrushing on a pickup truck, or even THINKS about dropping it to the ground and using those extremely useless flat tires around the giant rims --- should be pulled off of the road and pantsed in public, so that their teenaged kids won't be humiliated by them anymore, and they will finally have to admit that pickup trucks are not now, nor have they ever been, intended to impress hoochies at the club, nor are they designed to stand in for sports cars or bling-bling. IT'S A TRUCK, GAWDDAMMIT --- SHOW IT THE RESPECT THAT A TRUCK IS DUE, AND STOP MAKING IT LOOK LIKE A LITTLE DRAG-QUEEN BITCH OF A VEHICLE.

4. Drive-by shootings shalt become manditory. No, I'm not endorsing gang violence, and no, I don't find that shit funny (as I lost one of the first friends I made in NOLA to crackheads who did a drive-by and HIT THE WRONG HOUSE). What I'm referring to is the right of adult drivers over the age of 30 to earn a special addendum to their driver's license, after a proper course in handling a handgun, especially while driving, and allowing them to disable and remove poorly-driven, poorly-maintained, and flat-out-fucked-up vehicles from the roadways.

Those 900-year-old, three-foot-tall nuns in NOLA that have to peek up from under the steering column of their 1973 Gran Torinos to "drive," as they call it? Take out one of their tires, and help them push their cars off of the road. Stupid-ass teenagers who are "cruising" when you've got fresh groceries melting in your car and want to get the hell home? You will be allowed to take out at least two of their tires, AND shoot up their bass tubes and amps, so that their aural pollution will be ended simultaneously to the death of their shitty attempts at commandeering the public highways.

Yuppie scum who talk on their cellphones (even with those obnoxiously pretentious Janet Jackson headsets and the little hang-cords that ought to be illegal) whilst planning a GOP fund-raising dinner, applying makeup, refereeing a fight between their two mewling private-school brats, trying to make cappuccino on the dashboard Starbucks attachment, whittling their contribution to the private school's Craft Fair, and scanning the stock quotes in the morning paper, all whilst inching their city-block-sized SUVs forward at about .5 mph in full drive-time traffic?

Take out their tires, set fire to the SUV, sell the kids to a Kathie Lee Gifford sweatshop, and sell the cappuccino maker at a swap-meet. Then peel the angry little yuppie breeder hausfrau-cum-"consultant" off of your neck and fling her, much like kelp in your swimsuit, at the nearest tree or trash can.

And, of course, perfectly healthy, able-bodied fat-asses who "borrowed" their senior-citizen relatives' TEMPORARY "handicapped" hang-tag, because they're too lazy to waddle across the Wally World parking lot, even though they're maintaining a cellphone call the entire time that they're shopping for K-Y Warming Liquid and Preparation-H, and then they park ACROSS TWO FUCKING HANDICAPPED SPACES, AT A STORE THAT ONLY HAS TWO SPACES?

Them, you would be able, with your special driver's/hunter's license, to drag them out behind the Wally World dumpsters, beat them to death with their Chinese-sweatshop-made golf clubs, sell their fugly cars to the highest bidder, then send pictures of the "crime scene" to their stupid relatives who gave them the hang-tags, and piss on their graves --- DURING THE FUNERAL.

5. Rubberneckers shalt be made a part of the fender-bender/major accident with which they are so obsessed that they back up interstate traffic for TEN FUCKING MILES. If it's a major accident, replete with blood, guts, gorged-out eyes and flying appendages that causes them to stop traffic, then the justice-dealer can only break a couple of fingers, starting with the middle ones. If, however, it's a mere fender-bender awaiting a police report for their insurance companies, then the justice-dealer (the first driver to get TO the rubberneckers) shalt be allowed and fully enabled to mangle, mutilate, and dismember the rubbernecker until they appear to be the victim of a Metallica bus wreck who was riding in the luggage holds when the bus left the road.

More commandments to come later, as soon as another nitwit pisses me off in traffic, which is a daily occurance now that this hick-ass two-light town has been overrun by white-flight republicunt yuppie scum from Baton Rouge who are trying to escape all of the transplants from New Orleans. Happy travelling!

The War Tapes -- a documentary

I came across this movie review in the Hartford Advocate for the documentary "The War Tapes, Filmed By Soldiers In Iraq, Tells The Story Of The War That Tv News Can't Seem To Get."

This is the first I have read about the film.
Has anyone seen it yet, or read any articles about it? It was released in May, but it does not appear to have made it into the news until recently.
MSNBC has an article, and I found a blog with some info.

Here is the movie trailor

Here are some more reviews from rottentomatoes

It sure looks like "Freedom IS on the march"

I'll let you know MY humble opinion after I check the film out next week -- Looks like it opens in the Hartford area on the 25th.

Oh SHIT! Isn't the world supposed to end on the 22nd or 23rd? I always miss the openings of the good ones!

Do You Have Anything To Add?

Man, this is a good rant by John at Americablog.
Someone give George Bush a God damn fucking civics lesson
by John in DC - 8/18/2006 12:48:00 PM

I've had it with this idiot.

We've got the president of the fucking United States of America lecturing a US court of law that it's supposed to reach decisions NOT based on the rule of law, but on "the nature of the world we live in."

You God damn stupid fuck.

You have the nerve to claim Osama and the terrorists hate our democracy? They got nothing on you and your fellow "Republicans." Do you people even believe in freedom? Do you believe in the Bill of Rights? Do you believe in our Constitution? Do you fucking believe in anything other than your absolute power to do whatever the fuck you want like some two-bit communist dictator rather than the president of the greatest country on earth?

We live in a democracy, you incompetent ass - one that is quickly eroding because half the people of this country elected a moron to the presidency (twice) and now are so embarrassed by their vote that they refuse to stand up and demand an end to your idiotic reign of terror.

These are judges you're demeaning. American jurists. The people in charge of our laws. And you speak of them like they're nothing more than crap. You and your party have contempt for our entire system of jurisprudence, the entire system of checks and balances our democracy is based on, because you can't get your way 100% of the time. Well boo-fucking-hoo. We are a country of laws, you stupid stupid man.

The world in which we live is one in which the town drunk thinks he's the king of the fucking world.

Osama bin Laden is a danger to be sure. But the greatest threat to our democracy is from George Bush and his genuflecting Republicans.
Great rant, but what do we do about it? The media just reports bush's complete disregard for checks and balances without blinking an eye. There is no analysis- nothing. He is shitting on the constitution for all the country to see and no one is getting it. How do we stop the streamrolling of America by the neocons?

Obligatory Friday Sex Post

It's hard work trying to find a good one for y'all. See if you like this one.
If not, post your own in the comments.

A tourist stops to pose with one of the many phalluses at "Love Land" in South Korea.
Salacious Disneyland

Just behind the entrance to Love Land, an acrobatic, oral-sex ensemble greets visitors. It shows a man and two women -- one woman has her legs wrapped around the man's neck and looks like she's going to break her own neck any minute. The acrobatic threesome is illuminated at night, just like the other exhibits here: the nipple mountain crowned with pink nubs or the sturdy erect penises that rise up from the goldfish pond like a fountain. The sculptures are so explicit you can't help stopping in front of them with a mixture of disbelief and amusement -- even as a jaded Western tourist.

These people have it going on. Talk about a fun place to go to rekindle your sparks. Could you imagine this in Murka? It would cause an instantaneous rapture.

Here in Murka, we have creationist theme parks depicting humans and dinosaurs co-existing, we have Bible theme parks featuring the Holy Rollercoaster and humongous theme parks based on cartoon characters. Are we big babies here or what?

Maybe we should plan a blogger convention there? I'm game.

Do click here to read the article and do not forget to click on the photogallery if no one is looking over your shoulder.

Meanwhile, In the Forgotten War . . .

The MSM continues to navel gaze, with a now third day of obsession over the apprehension of the alleged killer of JonBenet Ramsey. This is a three-day front page story?

Meanwhile, as the NY Times notes, sectarian violence rages in Baghdad. Over three thousand Iraqi citizens died during the month of July, another American soldier died today (and how many does that bring us to?), we learn that the army hid and destroyed evidence of the Haditha massacre of Iraqi civilians, and cars have been banned from the streets of Baghdad during a Shiite religious ceremony.

Oh, but by all means, let's stay the course.

And, by all means, let's wait breathlessly to learn whether they really have the right man in the JonBenet case.

Have you been reading Rude Pundit's ongoing account of his visit to NOLA?

You'll probably want to hang a similar sign on your door after you read this prediction from Alex Jones, and this

Gonna Party Like It's 1984

I'm getting a little bit terrified. Not at terrorists, but the Attorney General.

"The most dramatic change," said Gonzales, "is the nature of the enemy our country today faces -- a stateless enemy sometimes hidden and nurtured here in our neighborhoods, taking advantage of the very laws they mock with their killing and destruction, as a shield from detection and prosecution."

Gonzales, further emphasizing the perceived domestic danger, stated, "The threat of homegrown terrorist cells may be as dangerous as groups like al Qaeda, if not more so.

"It is therefore essential that we continue to develop the tools we need to investigate their actions and intentions with the help of our partners, and prosecute those who travel down the road of radicalization."

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

hard questions in the news

Couple of interesting stories in the news and I wish readers would chime in on these topics:

Peter King endorses ethnic profiling.
He thinks that Muslims should get extra security checks at airport screenings. What kind of can of worms would this open? Or not? How do you know that someone is Muslim? Just by looks or name? Oh baby.

Levy's alliance on immigration
Suffolk County Executive on Long Island proposes that all government contractors verify that their employees are eligible to work in the United States. Immigrant rights groups are horrified.
Question: Isn't there a law that you must show a physical Social Security card when you apply for a job? If some people are using bogus cards, what can be done about that? Peter King endorses Levy: "the Bush administration had failed to enforce a 20-year-old law requiring employers to vouch for their workers' legal status."

#3 Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

Q Where is Macaca?
A Next to Yapeepee
hat tip: Rob Corddry, Daily Show

CRAP - CRAP - CRAP - CRAP - CRAP!!!!!

One of my FAVORITE words!

Let's use it in a sentence -- or --A headline's good too!

That's very good Mr. John Prescott (Deputy Prime Minister of Britain)! I couldn't have said it better....

Panic As Policy by Erik Leaver - WELL SAID ...well said!

Read the story at Tompaine
"Last week’s arrests of 24 British citizens accused of planning massive suicide missions against U.S.-bound airplanes unleashed widespread chaos and delays in airports around the world. In the aftermath of the arrests, amid the ensuing code red alerts, panic levels across Europe and the U.S. spiked. Hours after the plot was revealed, President George W. Bush boasted that, "This country is safer than it was prior to 9/11." While the plot’s disruption may have averted a catastrophe, there is little evidence to support the president’s claim."

Lost in the rhetoric is the fact that this plot was beaten by good old-fashioned police work, international cooperation and patience, rather than by fighting a “Global War on Terror.”

Santorum, no, not that, the Senator

Althought I'd rather see a video of man-sex that this sorry excuse for a campaign commercial now I don't have to explain to you that we have traditionally got little to pick from in senatorial races here in PA. HOWEVER when you even have little Scranton, PA newspapers noticing the cheesey effects in the commercials things have gotten awful bad:

True Pennsylvania Polka: special-effect lederhosen?
Scranton Times-Tribune

That’s the question being asked by many who have seen the senator’s new campaign commercial, which appears to show him gliding across the dance floor at a crowded polka party as he touts his achievements on behalf of Pennsylvania’s senior citizens.

Those edges appear around the senator throughout the ad, causing many (people other than me) to conclude that this marriage of politics and polka is really a hustle.
Put plainly, it looks like Mr. Santorum isn’t actually in the room with the snappy seniors and is more likely shuffling in front of a “green screen” with images of an incumbent-friendly hootenanny projected behind him.

For non-Hollywood types, green screens are used in movies and television to create special effects like pitting dinosaurs against King Kong, getting Superman off the ground or hiding Dick Cheney’s hooves and horns.

“Senator, thanks for all you do for us,” she coos before her brow tightens and her tone darkens. “Now move it or lose it!”

The quip, and the senator’s reaction (he doesn’t call her a terrorist or have her arrested), are likely designed to show his “human” side, but I suspect many viewers miss this while staring blankly at the background.

I noticed the apparent anomalies the first time I saw the ad. So did the dozen or so others I asked to watch it, with the exception of a single viewer who noted the ad’s suspicious aspects but concluded it was not doctored. I’ve also received calls about the ad and had a laugh over it with the man (and woman) in the street.

The overwhelming consensus: The ad is a fake.

Add to that all the trouble he's started by having his campaign staff FORGE signatures to get a Green Party candidate ONTO the ballot. "A handwriting analyst, hired by the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, revealed that four out of the five signatures on a petition signed by Senator Santorum's staffer were inconsistent with the signatures found on voter registration cards." I would LOVE to find out the names they forged, if one of them is mine I want to press charges.

Of course, then we have THIS to add into the fray:

We see that the Democratic Party is thinking about challenging those Green Party petitions to get its U.S. Senate candidate, Carl Romanelli, on the fall ballot here in Pa. Romanelli's presence would hurt Democratic challenger Bob Casey Jr., by siphoning votes on the far left.

As both Attytood and TPMmuckraker reported yesterday, every donor to the Green Party of Luzerne County, the once-obscure committee that paid for the $60,000 petition drive, is a Republican or conservative activist, most with ties to GOP Sen. Rick Santorum

Hmmmm, now how could that have happened?

John Stewart has taken a few swipes at him, and there are even a few websites dedicated to getting the man on dog sex freak out of office. Yet, after all this, after his voting records and support of W and the 'war on terrah' his is 'gaining' in polls? WTF?

Can someone, ANYONE please explain this to me...

Kittenwar!

Kittenwar! features cuteness battles betwixt adorable kittens.

They also feature the "winningest" and "losingest" cats that have graced their site.

Meet the Losingest Poster Child. To quote the oft-quoted JanetL: "That poor cat looks like it's being forced to pose for Hustler against its will!"

Biddy & Boy, as well as my first cat Simon (with Pookie the half-pit, half-English bulldog that he raised from a pup), have been added to the contest, but haven't shown up yet in the numbering system.

If you see my furry chirrens, please vote for 'em! (Seeing as how starved for attention and amusement as they claim to be... heh.) I would've added Vincent atop the ladder, but they said that the picture was too small. He was adorable too, dammit.

Also, Jesus' General's recent additions to OfTom's family are competing, as well! Vote for them, too --- brave soldiers that they are...!

They Banned Guns, Box Cutters, Nail Clippers and Toothpaste On Planes

Now It's Our Gel Bras.
Where Will The Madness End?

Since women are now suspects in airline terrorism "plots", authorities in the US are warning women not to wear gel bras on planes. They think that you could make a bomb in one of these babies. Pretty soon, they'll just ban women on planes altogether. Why don't they just shut down all the airlines until we win the "war on terra"™?

How are they planning to enforce this? Maybe flyers should all be subject to cavity checks and then fly naked?

Interesting comments after the article. Quite a few people said that they don't mind being checked because they feel safer, some ridiculed women in general and some suggested that we ought to employ racial profiling in the airports.

New Distraction

Or diligent police work?

JonBenet's killer may have been arrested in Asia today. Rumors have it he is a 41 yo school teacher.

I don't know, maybe I'm just jaded and wary, but it takes TEN years to find this guy; the mother dies under a cloud of suspicion, the middle class is going extinct, global warming is threatening nearly every aspect of our lives, etc. And by some stroke of cosmic luck they arrest this guy the same time the new 9/11 tapes come out and W's numbers are in the tank. Screw the mass media, I'm going to write some porn for one of my friends, she needs a pick me up.

Oh brother

Your leader was in PA today in order to preach about the Republican's "stewardship of the economy".

"The more Harleys sold in a place like Vietnam or China or India, the more likely that somebody is going to be able to find work," Bush said. They'll probably go out of business now.

Cheers and applause erupted inside the Harley-Davidson Inc. vehicle operations plant here when Bush straddled a high-end model painted blue and white and revved its engine again and again. Climbing down, he ripped off blue-tinted safety glasses that he insisted made him look like rock star Bono and jokingly struck a pose intended to show a hip side. (AP)
I think I'm gonna be sick. Bono. Right.

The land of the free - but free speech is a rare commodity

"It used to be said that academic rows were vicious because the stakes were so small. That's no longer true in America, where a battle is underway on campuses over what can be said about the Middle East and US foreign policy."

"Douglas Giles is a recent casualty. He used to teach a class on world religions at Roosevelt University, Chicago, founded in memory of FDR and his liberal-inclined wife, Eleanor. Last year, Giles was ordered by his head of department, art historian Susan Weininger, not to allow students to ask questions about Palestine and Israel; in fact, nothing was to be mentioned in class, textbooks and examinations that could possibly open Judaism to criticism."

"Students, being what they are, did not go along with the ban. A young woman, originally from Pakistan, asked a question about Palestinian rights. Someone complained and Professor Giles was promptly fired."
Read the rest of the story here, at the Observer.

I did not hear about this incident from any news source in the US yet, did you? Maybe I missed it? This isn't good -- how could this happen here... at an American university? Who is in charge of our colleges and universities? Is it the ones who sit on the Boards of these institutions of higher learning? Who has that kind of power to be able to fire someone over a classroom discussion of current world events? I don't get it....
Maybe this is just an isolated incident?

BTW -- I picked up a forgotten site in another interesting story at the
observer blogs. I used to visit
Watching America all the time -- very informative.

You Reap What You Sow

Remember the Paula Jones sexual harassment case against President Clinton? Of course you do. Remember when the Supreme Court ruled in 1997 that neither Clinton "or any other official has an immunity that extends beyond the scope of any action taken in an official capacity." Well Valerie Plame's lawyer will use that precedent to force Cheney and Rove to testify.

Free Speech War (new site)

Take a quick listen It's called: I DID NOT SPEAK UP AND NOW I WISH I HAD

Pass it along. It's the least we can do (while we still have easy access to the web).

Voter suppression? In America?

Raw Story has news about 6 states which actively work to hinder voter registration. And of course, this will have the most effect on Democratic voters. The states are Florida, Ohio, Arizona, Indiana, California and Missouri. Read and get busy.

Is This Happening Anywhere Else?

Copied, verbatim from Morning Call, Allentown, PA

Lawsuit seeks paper trail for Election Day

PHILADELPHIA -- -- Twenty-five voters from across Pennsylvania sued the state today seeking to stop the use of electronic voting machines that do not provide back up paper records. The records are necessary for people to verify that their votes were accurately recorded, attorneys said at a news conference at the Philadelphia offices of Drinker Biddle & Reath, one of the law firms representing the plaintiffs in the suit.

The suit aims to force counties to have systems in place for the November election that would have a paper record. The lawyers pointed to flaws with machines in several counties, including Berks County, that showed the machines are not trustworthy. In the May 2005 primary, machines in four Berks precincts failed to record votes because of programming errors.

The suit, filed in Commonwealth Court, could affect voting systems in 57 counties, including Lehigh, Northampton, Berks, Bucks, Montgomery, Monroe, Carbon and Schuylkill.

The voters filing the suit include two from the Lehigh Valley - Alan Brau, a physician from Hanover Township, Northampton County, and Cathy Reed of Allentown.Counties nationwide have been moving to computerized, or electronic, voting because of a federal mandate to avoid the kinds of vote-counting problems experienced in Florida in the 2000 presidential election.

Remember its all THEIR Fault

Yes, I am STILL p.o.'d at having our democratic process stolen out from under us. Diebold is bad enough but to publically call voters who didn't vote the way YOU wanted them to terrorists? I would pay good money to see someone take a 2 x 4 to that asshat's head on national television right now.

But while they yammer on and on about the 'war on terrah' (tm) please remember. The worst terrorist attack on American soil happened under THEIR watch. The Patriot Act which started the process of stripping away our liberties? Their watch. Iraqi war which so far has caused over 2,500 American deaths and 100,000 Iraqi deaths. Not only their watch, but their choice and their lies. The FUBAR of Homeland Security and FEMA, their watch. The massive, never before seen and may they never been seen again profits of oil companies...hell do you even need to ask the Texas boy how that happened?

Katrina and its citizens left to drown and rot was apparently less of a concern to our current crop of politician than the fact that Steve and John might fall in love and marry. Wiretapping without warrant or even evidence of any wrong doing in many occasions not nearly as important to them as all those Mexicans crossing over the border.

I am sure our readers can add a great deal more to this, but I want people to remember how screwed up this country is right now. I want SO MANY people to turn out to vote and I want SO MANY of those voters to toss out the incumbents that Diebold CANNOT lie about the results. I want our scientists to be able to work freely without the religions right dictating what is and is not 'moral' research. I want my political representative to represent the PEOPLE, not the vocal wingnuts who take bigotry and martyr complexes to a new high. I want to feel safe walking down the street, not because of big brother, but because crimes against women are treated as crimes, not 'boys will be boys' bullshit.

I want a lot of things for myself, my country and my family, but for right now I'll settle for a new congress with fresh blood, common sense and the ability to debate without resorting to schoolyard tactics and media spin

Now Here's a Story

Here's an excerpt from Protesting President Bush's visit

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson says it's his duty to speak at a rally outside City Hall when the president visits Utah's capital later this month, adding it would be "cowardly" and "unpatriotic" to stay silent.

"I don't respect people who see things headed in the wrong direction and because of their high sense of deference or because of their membership in the [national] culture of obedience they keep their mouths shut."
Many disagree.

Allergy Sufferers You're Doomed

Gotta luv it - due to the flooding followed by excessive heat RAGWEED is producing a bumper crop this year. So from now until the first frost take your meds, either give up on contacts or use disposable and do your best to stay inside where (hopefully) the pollen count isn't so bad.

I also came across an interesting article (yes, the ER is slow this am, I am reduced to paging through medical journals as I can't get them to turn off Faux News). Allergic reactions to cockroaches are fairly common and are a contributing factor to asthma in young, urban children BUT DID YOU KNOW that 21% of the population is allergic to lady bugs? That's the same percentage that is allergic to cats.

Apparently it is very bad during the fall because the Asian Ladybug Beetle tend to find their way inside of homes to nest for the winter. So yet another reason to fill cracks, cauk around windows and doors and insulate well (as if the rising cost of heating fuel wasn't enough of a reason). If you are already infested the suggest a good vacuum cleaner and a bright light.

I Happen to Like Immigrants

This is my two cents and commentary for the day.

Living here on Long Island which is very close to NYC- well we share the island with Queens and Brooklyn- we are very accustomed to newly arrived immigrants (hence the popular tshirt, "Welcome to NY. Now Go Home"). I'm a first generation American on my mother's side and our family get togethers always reminded me of a Woody Allen movie as she was raised on the lower east side of Manhattan where no one spoke the same language as their neighbors and they grew up rather quirky. I usually prefer foreigners to home grown jaded types like myself and on my father's side of the family.

I'm used to people not understanding English and I am amused by it except when I am dealing with airport security. Isn't it funny though that the foreigners who can barely eek out a sentence in English work for the TSA when you're about to miss a flight? My opinion on foreigners is not popular around here in the once very white, Christian and some Jews neighborhood, but what the hell. It's only my opinion.

I meet people all the time who are simply petrified of all the foreign born citizens who own shops. I tell them to open a shop then. Heck no. Ick. Well someone's gotta be willing to work long hours so we can get our Chinese food and pizza 24 hours a day, pick up our laundry and get gasoline in the middle of the night and man the convenience stores 365 days a year. We're sooo spoiled by the willingness of some people to work odd hours and yet we don't appreciate why we have the luxury to shop for fresh produce when others are sleeping.

I used to tell foreigners about big sky country out west and that those states needed some more population in order to make their Senate seats less repugnant to those of us who are literally squished yet open minded. I am not averse to new people at all, but the traffic here is unquestionably a nightmare. The island wasn't originally developed to handle such a load. It was potato fields and vacation homes pre WWII. We have Parkways. They are tree lined, winding roads and rather narrow. They were intended for Sunday drives, not commuting millions of people every day. At every curve, commuters slam on their brakes. Talk about ripping your hair out while driving. There is only one expressway and it's loaded with trucks.

There is nary a square acre of land that hasn't been developed. Our electricity and water is always under a strain and no one wants a new bridge in their backyard so that we can easily head to the mainland for a little open land. If it weren't for all the coastal recreation areas not more than 10 miles away from anywhere, it would be a living hell. And of course, there's a strip mall every mile or so.

I enjoy the local "color" and all, but this is a big land we live in and I think people ought to spread out more. Including me. As many of you know, I have my sights set on Arizona because there is still lots of space, you can really see the stars, I can understand Spanish, adore Frida Kahlo and it's warm there. Unfortunately the water situation concerns me. So we'll see. I also love New Hampshire but everyone looks the same there and it's unnerving- not to mention that there are towns where everyone has the same last name and they all look like they just walked into a wall and are stunned. I can't describe it any other way. But most of southern New Hampshire is absolutely delightful, the boringly same-looking folks are friendly and the mountain areas are gorgeous. The coast of Maine is enchanting but I can no longer afford $$ to think about moving there.

Imagine my surprise to read that foreigners are now more likely to settle in other states than the ever popular, Florida, New Jersey, California, New York, etc. I never wished that foreigners would infiltrate the southeast, but hey they could use some new blood too- unfortunately most of the immigrants headed there are undocumented though. Oh well. They'll learn to deal. The documented immigrants will soon follow.

On my block alone, some of my neighbors hail from Italy, Palestine, South America, India, Spain and God only knows where else because we haven't figured out how to communicate yet except to wave. My best friend came here with no money but worked at any job he could until he could learn the language enough, save enough money to buy a house within 2 years and work in the engineering field he was trained for in the old country. Good lord, but people really do strive for the American dream. The shop owners are mostly from Korea, China, Italy, Central America, Pakistan and Turkey. Try to get your hair cut from a non-Italian. Nice folks, all of them. They work 18 hour days and make the working class, "born here" Americans look bad. I sometimes wonder if that's why the home growns resent the new comers.

Seven dwarfs more famous than US judges

More people could name Harry Potter than Tony Blair. More people knew about the planet Kryptonite than Mercury. Moe, Larry and Curly are more popular than the 3 branches of government. I assume that adults were polled.

So there ya go. It would be fun to rename all the branches of government, the US judges, world leaders, planets, countries and such with names of fictional characters. And we were wondering why the American cable news stations could get away with spouting lies.

Know Your Fascist

Islamo-fascism-shmascism

Funny, I have been researching this topic for a few weeks- "Islamo-fascism". It's like "Christian-fascism" or "Jeso-fascism", only less accurate. George Bush used the term a few times recently and I found it pretty absurd because Islamic fundamentalists and "terrorists" aren't fascists in the classic sense of the word. We're pretty used to the US government using slurs against others that would only describe themselves- projecting, so it's really no surprise that they have dragged "fascism" out of the dictionary and are attempting to redefine it. Me, I crack up when O'Lielly calls liberals "fascists". Not quite, douchbag.

When we think "fascism" we think of a merger between government and big business, we think of deregulation, capitalism (cruel capitalism to be exact) and we think of war profiteering. Nothing like that going on in the Middle East. Oh, but we sure have that going on here in the good old USA. Oh yeah, and when that happens, you can say buh-bye to democracy. You can have a democracy when the playing field is fair, not tilted 89% towards big business, like here. Fascism arises out of failed democracies. "Islamo-fascism" isn't arising out of any democracy.

We think of fascism as overzealous or militant nationalism. See any of that happening in the Middle East? Heck, different sects of Muslims are out to kill each other in their own countries and abroad. The so-called "Islamic-fascists" haven't been waving any flags around for any particular country. They enjoy waving and burning ours, but as long as they don't do it here, it's legal.

In addition to the all important economic and political signs of fascism that must be present, we think of fascist governments as those that poo poo science, the arts, creativity, intellectual pursuits and higher education. Oh wait. That sounds like our government. My bad. Fascists wrap themselves in flags, in religion, in homophobia, in xenophobia, in mysogyny and there is always a bad guy/s for everyone to hate. By golly it sounds like an Orwell novel.

So do read 'Welcome to Neo-Fascism 101' by Andrew Bosworth because he pretty much wrapped up the discussion in a neat package. He also advises:

First, always replace the term "neo-conservatism" with "neo-fascism."

Second, always charge those who use the term "Islamo-fascism" with anti-Semitism (because Arabs - most of whom are Muslims - are technically "Semitic," too).

Third, remind people who use the term "Islamo-Fascism" that the term is historically inaccurate and that the main ingredients of classical fascism - 1) monopoly capitalism; 2) erosion of democracy; and 3) militant nationalism - are coming together in the United States like a Perfect Storm.

This Can't Be Good News For Shrubby . . .

Or Joementum, for that matter. Here is an Op-Ed from the Fayetteville (NC) Observer slamming Joementum and Darth Cheney for their speeches last week equating Lamont's primary victory as a big win for Osama bin Forgotten.

"Something else verges on terrifying too. The reactions by some of our politicians were a chilling reminder of their willingness to use our fear to further their own agenda. . . Politicians can, and should, debate our strategy against terrorists and the course of the war in Iraq. But questioning each other’s patriotism or resolve against terrorists should be out of bounds. It is unnecessary and divisive."

There's more, so enjoy.

Why is it a big deal that a newspaper from a relatively small town in North Carolina prints something like this? I'm glad you asked. It's a big deal, because Fayetteville is where Fort Bragg is. And Fort Bragg is just about the largest army base in the entire country. Virtually the entire town of Fayetteville exists to service the residents of the army base. In Fayetteville, North Carolina, they live, love and bleed OD green. Fort Bragg is the home of the 82nd Airborne (the Screaming Eagles of WWII fame). And unless I'm much mistaken, the 82nd Airborne has seen more than its fair share of casualties in Iraq.

So when the local paper sits up and calls bullshit on The Biggus Dickus (thanks, Annti), and says, "The voters know the difference between our Iraq war problems and the overall effort against terror. Politicians would be wise to remember that[]", well, it's worth taking note of.

I think that I just heard Commander Codpiece shit his britches.

Ceasefire.... or just the beginning of the real war?

A MUST READ by Robert Fisk

Excerpts from the article:

"The real war in Lebanon begins today. The Israeli army, reeling under the Hizbollah's onslaught of the past 24 hours, is now facing the harshest guerrilla war in its history."

"From this morning, Hizbollah's operations will be directed solely against the invasion force. And the Israelis cannot afford to lose 40 men a day. Unable to shoot down the Israeli F-16 aircraft that have laid waste to much of Lebanon, the Hizbollah have, for years, prayed and longed and waited for the moment when they could attack the Israeli army on the ground."

"Now they are set to put their long-planned campaign into operation. Thousands of their members remain alive and armed in the ruined hill villages of southern Lebanon........

"The Lebanese government is our address for every problem or violation of the [ceasefire] agreement," Israel's Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, said yesterday, as if realising the truce would not hold."

"And that, of course, provides yet another excuse for Israel to attack the civilian infrastructure of Lebanon."

"Far more worrying, however, are the vague terms of the UN Security Council's resolution on the multinational force supposed to occupy land between the Israeli border and the Litani river."

"For if the Israelis and the Hizbollah are at war across the south over the coming weeks, what country will dare send its troops into the jungle that southern Lebanon will have become?"

"Tragically, and fatally for all involved, the real Lebanon war does indeed begin today."

Flashback

8-11-06

Prince's "Sign O' The Times" came on today, and incited several million flashbacks. Not the movie itself, I'd never seen it before. But the time, the era, the freedom, the art… that's what sent me reeling back to the late '80s.
I never thought I'd live to see the day that would make the late '80s look good, but here we are. The differences between life then and life now --- take my breath away.
Sure, we were living under a bullshitting P.R. despot then, but at least then, we still had the myth of freedom of expression to hold onto, us "rebels," we "subversives." It was the era of the wannabe-hippies, the children of the late sixties and early 70s, the ones who felt like we missed out on so much and wanted to recreate the "peace and love and anarchy" that our parents' generation had given up.
We didn't know how good we had it. Not just because the economy was different and we were not yet having to fend for ourselves (we'd find out about Trickle-Down economics soon enough, as we were the classes being trickled-upon); we had idealism, we had HOPE. We thought that, by looking back at what some of them had accomplished back then, that we could pull the same kind of anarchy, we could change the world, we could make a difference. Little did we know.

Granted, not all of us shared in the Los-Angeles based watershed of artistic expression (which we would only learn later, was merely the latest minstrel show that we were allowed, to distract us from what was really coming to take control), some of us were broke-ass or nearly-broke kids in bumfuck towns in the South, or in the 'hoods of the West, or what have you, who couldn't get to a real city, couldn't find the right avenues to express our angst, our rage, our hope, our ideas, our potential. But we felt drawn towards a mythical center, an ideal that could not be encapsulated by marketing gimmicks or talking points. We felt like there were others like us out there, trying to change the world, and that we were pushing towards the same goal.

Of course, for Prince, this was before he found out that Warner Brothers only optioned artists like himself and Ice-T (intelligent, angry black men) for that exact same minstrel attraction factor, and nothing else. That's when we all lost our music-bidness virginity --- that's how we found out that the artists are disposable and that the machine will keep on turning, with or without them. But of course, for the industry, nothing changed, they just found the next generation to sell their pre-packaged shit (way less actual "expression," of course, they're looking' for HITS, bay-bee!) to, and kept rolling on. We got a little more bitter, they got a lot more powerful. Simon Cowell and his ilk are just every record corporation's wet dream --- reduce the singers to nothing but Wal-Mart "associates," and then it doesn't matter what they want to "say" or even if they have anything to say at all --- they're here to do a job, and if they can't handle that, find the next one.

And now we live in an era that makes Reaganomics look like a fucking walk in the park. After the go-go stock-market orgy of the '80s, everything real and artistic and powerful in this country was reduced to a commodity. Warner Brothers, Sony/BMG --- pretty much every music-vending corporation, unlike the smaller relatively "indy" labels like Atlantic & (Def) American --- reduced it all to a product. It wasn't about the words anymore. It was about synthesized beats, interchangeable Barbie & Ken dolls, and it took the power away from the artists, away from the writers, and put it where people like Reagan (slave to the studio system 'til the death) and Bush Sr. (slave-owner) thought that the power always belonged: In the hands of the money-changer suits. And now look at the shit that passes for "music."

If we had known back then what we'd be dredging through now, we might've tried a helluva lot harder. Maybe we got distracted by minimum-wage drudgery. Maybe we got distracted by trying to have careers. Maybe we just got distracted, and forgot what we were fighting for in the first fucking place. We go from "Just Say No" to "Shut the fuck up and sit the fuck down, Big Brother Has Everything Under Control." We surpassed the insulting condescension of Nancy Reagan to the lorazepam-junkie Stepford Shrew, Laura (eats) Bush. From the "go-go '80s", we've devolved to the "Fuck you, I've got mine, you don't deserve anything you treasonous scum '00s."
And the real pisser is, what the fuck do we have to show for it? Aside from the obvious giving up of Constitutional freedoms, the raping of our national character, the raping of the entire fucking planet, the destruction of the environment, and we've allowed those cocksucker who were born into their money during the '80s to decide WHO is a "patriot" and WHAT this country is supposed to stand for --- instead of standing up our damned selves and telling 'em where to stick that shit.
Feminism was a "big issue" back then, but after "Baby Boom," (Diane Keaton should be flogged for that one!) women having careers wasn't really considered a choice, it was a MISTAKE, and nevermind that 90% of the women who work in this country work because they HAVE TO --- keep reminding them that they're FAILING at the one job that "matters" --- motherhood. For women who have the luxury to CHOOSE to stay home with the kids, that's all lovely and fine. But the rest of us have bills to pay. And who the fuck are those marketing douchebags to tell ANYONE what she should do with her life? Oh, right --- they're the corporate pimps who own this country. THAT'S why it's still considered an "issue" --- as in, if you go to work, everything that goes wrong on the planet is YOUR FAULT, MOMMY. Freudian much?
Such a convenient distraction, too --- if they're too busy trying to do EVERYTHING, they won't be messing around in politics too much, will they? Let the men handle that, hon, you've got carpool duty. And remember, there's brown people invading your country to steal your job, so make damned sure that you support the folks who hate the brown people --- like those brown rappers who want to fuck your daughter.

Oh, no, don't worry about the never-married non-breeders like me, we don't exist, at least not according to Madison Avenue & D.C. --- we're "PRE-PREGNANT," we're still "looking for Mister Right" --- we'll never be complete, sovereign entities unto ourselves, we're just unfinished clay, waiting for the right hand to mold us.

The thing that I miss the most about the '80s is that the rich boys knew when to sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up --- they didn't go out in public and try to tell everybody else how to live --- the sorority bitches were too worried about their socials and their keggers and their abortions. They were tactful about being the evil spawn of robber-baron bastards who'd been raping the country since the Industrial Revolution. They knew their place. They stayed on their mansions' grounds, they stayed on their yachts and their vacation beaches, they didn't put their ugly mugs out in the public forum for all of us to have to look at what money CAN'T buy. Of course, this was back when this country still tried to maintain the illusion that the working class mattered, and that we were actually PEOPLE, unlike the post-NAFTA, post-FTAA world in which we reside now, when we've all been replaced by computers, illegal immigrants who are too afraid to ask for a living wage, and the entire population of Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay).

But now, they, the self-appointed "ruling classes," don't even have the tact or the good (in)breeding to be tasteful about their money-grubbing evil deeds. Now, they've got the artificial testicles to BRAG and BRAY about the silver coke spoons that were in their just-born mouths. We know damned well that 99% of the "conservatives"/republicunts on the web are NOT "self-made" men OR women, we know that they were trust-fund babies, we know that they've never broken a fucking sweat doing anything besides their domestics. But they actually have been able to bullshit a lot of the suburbanites/yuppies and even the working class of this country into believing their bullshit P.R. packages --- like they EARNED the right to be such assholes.
I'm not kidding.

I've spoken before of Psycho Sister and her useless-as-tits-on-a-boar-hog Second Hubby, the world's largest 9-year-old. Granted, a formerly strong woman who worked her ass off all of her life (and still working her 43-year-old ass off at manual-labor jobs, since HE can't seem to make a decent living) is somewhat dick-whipped about her political views these days, and by damn, it's depressing to see. Of course, she's never been a humanist or even a real democrat at heart, but FUCK, she's turning into an out-and-out heartless bastard. But these are the people who are taking their moral cues from an off-the-wagon dry drunk who thinks of himself as our sovereign royalty and the evil cyborg who is running us all into the fucking ground. They SYMPATHIZE with the trust-fund babies who've never worked a day in their fucking lives. How in the fuck did THAT happen?
These are the people who were so turned off of the first president who gave a fuck if they made a living wage because of a BLOWJOB and the kidnapping of their religion by hypocritical psychotics who look down on 'em just like all of the other billionaires. But that's the only "power" that they've got, so they cling to it, because their government, their neighbors, and their world has all turned on 'em, at least from what they see.
I remember when we could reach out to people like that. I remember when money and where it comes from wasn't the reason that we all HATED each other. And I gotta tellya, I'm just as guilty when it comes to using bandwidth to nit-pick at every single sin, every single fuckup, every single deliberate act of evil that those cocksuckers have committed. I've lost sight of the big picture because I can't stop being so indignant at every single arrogant smirk on their faces as they purposefully fuck us all over, over and over again. I can't stop wanting to whack every single one of those arrogant, ignorant bastards with a tire tool and feed 'em into a woodchipper. But the flashbacks today remind me that I'm part of something bigger. That what we're fighting for is more important than my own personal struggles, my own personal bigotries, my own personal anger. And if I sound like a dotty old stoner, well fucking sue me. You won't get anything but a lawyer's bill, but go for it.

People like Joe Lieberman lost the vision a long fucking time ago. Joe's been in it for Joe since before he joined Al Gore's ticket. That's why I have no sympathy for the man, since his narcissism and mercenary self-gratification is so blatantly obvious, all the way from here. His record might still matter to his constituents (or former constituents), but to the rest of us, we see what he is today.
Same for Bill Clinton. Sure, sure, he might do a lot of good charity work nowadays, in what appears to be a very calculating attempt to right his "legacy" in the eyes of Southern Democrats who know that he'll NEVER be Jimmy Carter. But we can smell the mercenary from here, too. We know that Bill is in it for Bill. He might've been on our side at one point, but not after he signed NAFTA. They got to him, and before he had the heart surgery. And now he's just trying to be useful, and I honestly don't see any point to him. But at least he's trying hard not to make Hillary look any worse than he already has… But I don't completely trust her, either.
That's why Al couldn't get everybody behind him in 2000. He had the vision, but he couldn't communicate it to the rest of the country. I don't think that John Kerry had the vision, I think that he was just the safe choice. John Edwards has the vision, but he's not ready. He's doing a lot of important work, but he's not ready. I don't know what we're going to do in the next two years, but we'd damned well better get off of our asses and do SOMETHING. 'Cause the nitpicking isn't getting it done. I've wasted many a post lately, I know that. But my brain's been located somewhere northeast of my rectum lately, and I'm working on that.

We don't have an art scene or a musical legacy to inspire us this time. We've got some great anarchist music out there, System Of A Down, Pink, Weezer, Ani Defranco's still kicking ass… But you'll notice that they get no play for their OPINIONS, they only get airplay if the videos can draw the attention of the ADHD 10-24 y.o. caucasians with disposable income.

The hippie scene in the late '80s got blown off of the map by the arrival of Compton, Oakland & Brooklyn gangsta rap. It wasn't about free love for middle-to-working-class white kids who wanted to love the world and shut the republicunts up anymore. It was death, desperation, and the "saving" graces of machismo and greed. It was survival mode where idealism fell by the wayside. The people who'd been marginalized during the Reagan/Bush era were fighting back, and fuck you if you didn't like it. And now rap/hip-hop is nothing but booty and pussy, weed and Couvossier, look at my bling and fuck you if you're not smart enough to get some for yourself. Instead of female rappers like Queen Latifah and MC Lyte, we've got Li'l Kim. Feminism is being buried in EVERY demographic level, kids, it ain't just the fat redneck republicunts and the bitches who want to drive Ford Envirostompers.

We're all a lot more jaded now. We don't care about women's rights, we don't care about minority rights, we don't care about anybody, at least not as a nation. The rich bastards have turned the debate to right where they wanted it --- immigration is a threat to your job. Black people are a threat. Hispanic people are a threat. But eerily silent about big China (and their ongoing human rights violations), the real threat --- wonder why that is? You don't see out-and-out racism in the media against Asians, but you still see it against blacks, Hispanics, middle-eastern and Arab people, eastern Europeans, you name it. Hype the Russian mafia, hype black-on-black crime, hype ALL black crime, but keep the white kids from "good homes" who rape, murder, steal and laugh about it --- keep them off of the 5 o'clock news. We're in 1964 and don't even know it. Because that's what works for the powers that be --- keep us divided and distressed, take away our earnings, take away our healthcare, take away the infrastructure that has kept this country going --- and we'll be too busy covering our own asses to notice what THEY are shoving up them. Oh, and throw a nice tarpaulin of religious/cult bigotry over all of it, and the rich bitches are safe & secure to continue stealing everything and ruining everything else.
So what now?
How do we get our shit together enough, and who are we going to trust to put what WE believe in out there? How do we remind our contrarian neighbors that our ideals and our worries are not so far from theirs, seeing as how we're all getting fucked just the same?

C'mon --- gimme something.

Go Ned!

"My God, here we have a terrorist threat against hearth and home and the very first thing that comes out of their mind is how can we turn this to partisan advantage. I find that offensive," Lamont said in an interview Sunday with The Associated Press.

Cheney suggested Wednesday that Lamont's victory might encourage "the al-Qaida types" who want to "break the will of the American people in terms of our ability to stay in the fight and complete the task."

Lamont said Lieberman's swipe at his candidacy "sounded an awful lot" like Cheney.

"It surprised me," he said. "It seemed almost orchestrated...."

Here's the full story

And -- In other news from The Constitution State:

WATERBURY, Conn. -- Democrat Ned Lamont's campaign manager said he will send an apology to the mayor of Waterbury for describing the city that backed his opponent, Sen. Joe Lieberman, as a place "where the forces of slime meet the forces of evil."

He said the comments were in the context of a broader discussion of state politics in which former Waterbury Mayor Philip A. Giordano was the "slime" and former Gov. John G. Rowland, a Waterbury native, was the "evil." From the Advocate

Looks like this is going to get ugly. FINALLY!!!
Someone who's willing to fight fire with fire.

Stay tuned, this is going to be one dirty fight. I have a feeling the shit is going to be hitting the fan BIG TIME!
(Don't you wish Kerry stood up to w like this)

ADDITION:

I decided to pick up the Hartford Courant today. The commentary section was full of opinions. I thought you might be interested in a few of the comments. Here is a sampling.

Also, words from Ted Kennedy made the front page of the commentary section, underneath a huge picture from April, 2005, of Darth Cheney. The veep is standing in front of the American flag with a very stern look on his face; his finger pointed like an angry father toward a child who he has just grounded. Here is Senator Kennedy's Commentary.

Depleted Uranium In The News

Again. How many sick vets will it take to wake up? Will anyone ever listen to anyone other than the Pentagon? How many veterans are sick, dying or dead because of DU (depleted uranium)? "They" say only 30% of those who served show these symptoms. Does that make them insignificant? My radioactive next door neighbor died 2 months ago after being mysteriously ill since he served in GWI. His bodily functions shut down one by one since he returned. It was amazing that he lasted so long, but his quality of life was never the same after serving his country. It sucked. And those he served denied that his service had anything to do with his contracting the most vile and rare cancer on earth, his kidneys shutting down, his spine collapsing and a host of other horrors.

So how does our country repay those who serve? by denying that they are affected by depleted uranium. The DoD declares that exposure to radioactive material such as DU is safe. Hmm. They must not have read their history books regarding the troops exposed to the atomic bomb during WWII. We are living in a dystopian novel.

We're All Gonna Die. Again.

World to end on August 22
While the Middle East smoulders, commentators of an apocalyptic bent are lining up for a date with Armageddon.

The wingers have been all over this new prophecy written by a nutcase in the WSJ. And Glenn Beck got the freepi in an uproar. How can CNN run this shit?

What do you make of this?

Israel to Halt War in Lebanon at 7am Monday according to the AP

Israel, meanwhile, flew hundreds of commandos into southern Lebanon on Saturday, tripling its troop strength to 30,000 and sending some army units as far as the Litani River even as both sides indicated they would accept a U.N. cease-fire plan to stop the heavy fighting.
Hmmm "heavy fighting".

"Party No. 3"

This title is from a recent article (Aug. 10th) in the NYTimes. It was written by David Brooks:

Party No. 3 -- A McCain-Lieberman Party is emerging because of deep trends that are polarizing our politics.

I got to this story after reading David Sirota's Blog

Sirota writes: it is arguably the most brazen admission of elite disdain for democracy that has ever been printed in a major American newspaper. Before you dismiss that as hyperbole, read the third line of Brooks' piece:

"Polarized primary voters shouldn't be allowed to define the choices in American politics."
Yes, you read that correctly: According to one of the most prominent columnists in America, "voters shouldn't be allowed to define the choices in American politics."

TALK ABOUT A FULL FRONTAL ASSAULT ON DEMOCRACY

He links to the NYTimes story, however, it has now expired.
This piece from the SmirkingChimp has the bulk of Brooks' words.

What do you think? Will a McCain/Lieberman party emerge?

Also of interest, was a piece Sirota did on another NYTimes columnist Billionaire Tom Friedman. I had no idea as to the extent of Friedman's wealth.

Bomb the World With Love

The Dark Wraith created this graphic especially for blondesensians. I just adore a big ol' love missile, baby. And that's quite a war head. whew!

Go on over and check out the Dark One's new propaganda poster dedicated to the monster Lieberstein- It Lives!

Is the latest London terror threat real?

"According to knowledgeable sources in the UK and other countries, the Tony Blair government, under siege by a Labor Party revolt, cleverly cooked up a new "terror" scare to avert the public's eyes away from Blair's increasing political woes. British law enforcement; neo-con and intelligence operatives in the United States, Israel, and Britain; and Rupert Murdoch's global media empire cooked up the terrorist plot, liberally borrowing from the failed 1995 "Oplan Bojinka" plot by Pakistan- and Philippines-based terrorist Ramzi Ahmad Yousef to crash 11 trans-Pacific airliners bound from Asia to the United States. In the latest plot, it is reported that liquid bombs were to be detonated on 10 trans-Atlantic planes outbound from Britain to the United States."

What do you Think?

Welcome to NY, Now Go Home

Oh goodie.

I am taking our houseguest to Kennedy Airport for her hopefully uneventful flight to Arizona this morning. America West flies out of the British Airways terminal (#7, the one getting all the attention), meaning she gets to go through the same security check point that the 'would be terrorists' on international flights will be standing on. I've suggested that she check just about everything so we plan to get there extra early to wait on the 'check your baggage' lines and then the 'you might be a terrorist so open your bags, you blonde haired, blue eyed girl, line.' This is a good way to stir up anti-Muslim sentiment across America- all part of the plan, my pretties.

Luckily we will be greeted by hunky cops with big guns in Terminal 7. Hi boys. hubba hubba

Newsday this morning devoted a whole pullout section to the new wave of "terrorism". We just checked it to see what the new rules are. Funny that the NY Port Authority folks have known about this "threat" for months and hadn't done anything about it. Guess what else? The TSA cannot screen for liquids. Shocking. We checked the flight status and it's of course delayed for an hour- we're wondering if the connecting flight will wait for her.

My son noticed the large pullout photo in Newsday of the huge bin that contains all the liquids that have been disposed. If any of them contain explosives, wouldn't it be dangerous to have that bin in the middle of the airport terminal? Nah.

Resisting the urge to get really pissed right now, I will report back in a few hours.

/snark

UPDATE 11:49: They had to delay all the planes leaving from Terminal 7 because the lines to check your bags were so long and there were too few employees working. Turns out that the day shift workers from yesterday were there until 3am this morning due to all the delays. So we waited on line for over an hour and a half for our houseguest to check a bag. There were 3 employees working the counter at America West and hundreds of people on line. There were 2 million Japanese tourists in the terminal as well.

We started cursing out Joe Lieberman and Connecticutians while waiting on line and explained to the other people that if Joe had won the primary in Connecticut that this wouldn't have happened. (Yes, we were being sarcastic.) They didn't understand English like most of the employees at JFK, so I guess they didn't appreciate our snarky "9/11 changed everything" meme of the day or our "Take my freedom. Please" quips.

Yep, the National Guard and the Swat Teams were there in full regalia. Nothing like staring at an M-16 to wake the sleep out of your eyes. I thanked them for protecting my freedom. They smirked at me. I asked if I should have worn my kevlar vest too. No answer. Maybe they didn't speak English either. Not surprising. Lots of females in uniform with big guns and blue eyeshadow kept their eyes on us. We eyed them back defiantly, finishing our drinks and tossing them into the provided receptacles that were brimming with toothpaste tubes and hand cream. News crews and satellite dishes lined the 'drop off passengers' area and eager brunettes with big microphones pounced on soon to be weary travelers asking if they were afraid to fly. We weren't until you shoved your big dick-like microphone in our faces, thank you.

All I can say is that if you don't have to fly, DON'T. It will also drive the price of fuel down.

George Galloway - Interview with SkyNews

I thought some of you might be interested in viewing this video interview with George Galloway. As a member of Parliment, Mr. Galloway handles the media, in my opinion, like EVERY member of our congress should -- but does not. In this video, he directly takes on the propaganda style of the media.

I believe he is on to the ugly truth that most people are not willing to face with regards to Lebanon, especially the media.

Here is his website if you would like to learn more about him.

Update: See the google version of this video if the other one doesn't work.

Much better viewing at the google site!!

On American Imperialism

Are we getting dizzy yet from all the spinning?

“If we just pick up like Ned Lamont wants us to do, get out by a date certain, it will be taken as a tremendous victory by the same people who wanted to blow up these planes in this plot hatched in England. It will strengthen them and they will strike again.” - Senator Lieberman 8-10-06

Absolutely not. Senator Lieberman's pro-war position did not protect us from a terrorist attack. He gives himself too much credit. What logic do the war mongers use to convince themselves that engaging in a never ending war will keep us safer? Are the terrorists monitoring Democrats in the Senate now in order to determine whether or not they should strike? I guess it depends on which terrorists we are talking about, now doesn't it?

"The thing that's partly disturbing about [Lieberman's loss] is the fact that our adversaries, if you will, in this conflict, and the al Qaeda types--they clearly are betting on the proposition that ultimately they can break the will of the American people in terms of our ability to stay in the fight and complete the task." -Dick Cheney 8-10-06 (more nonsense from Dick at Raw Story)

Dick was contemplating his losses in defense contractor stocks. feh.
The will of the American people is that we are never going to kill all the bad guys no matter how much cannon fodder (troops) we commit to this folly in the middle east.

Meanwhile, Downing Street admits that Blair and Bush were talking about this latest threat to American airlines last week and on Sunday. The Bushistas sought political gain from this "foiled plot" and the British held off on making it public until after the Lieberman primary to decide which way they would spin it. More proof that there is nothing they can do to convince me that their motives are not evil.

Faux news dredged up alleged criminal and disgraced former congressman, Tom DeLay who described the liberal world view as “Can’t we all get along?” and said that liberals’ reaction to a terrorist attack is, “You can’t go after these wonderful people that just killed a bunch of Americans.” Think Progress

Subject: "I Had An Abortion" -- Ms. campaign

Dear Jaye,

We're trying to get word out about Ms.' new "I Had An Abortion"
campaign and thought that Winding Road in Urban Area might be interested.

In 1972, a year before Roe v. Wade, 53 prominent U.S. women publicly
declared in Ms. that they had undergone abortions. Among them were Billie
Jean King, Anne Sexton, Susan Sontag, Anais Nin and Ms. founder Gloria
Steinem.

Now, in 2006, with Roe under serious threat, Ms. is relaunching the campaign
with a call for women to sign an abortion rights petition headed "We had
abortions." See https://msmagazine.com/donations/ms/womenspetition0725.asp
for details. Those who have not had abortions can sign separately, in
solidarity.

The anti-choice web has gotten wind of the project and has gone into attack
mode. (Google "Ms. abortion petition" and you'll see all the vitriol
it's spawned.) It'd be great if the feminist blogosphere could represent for
the pro-choice side!

As always, I'd be grateful if you shoot me an email when you post so I don't
miss it.

Ms. Magazine Launches Women's Petition on Abortion, Birth Control
Groundbreaking New Petition Will Put a Face on the Abortion Issue

Arlington, VA - Ms. magazine has launched a groundbreaking new petition to
make visible the millions of women in the United States who have had
abortions.

"We must put a human face on the abortion issue," said Katherine Spillar,
executive editor of Ms. magazine. "Ms. calls on women who have had
abortions to step forward publicly by signing our petition, which we will
send to Congress, the White House, and state legislators. Politicians need
to know that their decisions affect their neighbors, their colleagues,
influential movers and shakers, and even their own daughters. For the sake
of women in the United States and around the world, we cannot lose the right
to safe and accessible abortion and access to birth control."

The "Women's Petition for Safe, Legal, and Accessible Abortion and
Birth Control" is based on the petition that ran in the 1972 debut issue of Ms.,
in which 53 prominent American women, such as Ms. co-founder Gloria Steinem,
publicly declared that they had undergone abortions before the procedure was
legal. These women called for the repeal of anti-abortion laws in the
United States to end the "untold suffering" and deaths of women who
were forced to have unsafe, illegal, back-alley abortions.

Today, the new Ms. petition comes at a time when the South Dakota
legislature has voted to ban abortion, and nearly a dozen states have moved
similar abortion bans forward. If Roe v. Wade were overturned by the
Supreme Court, 17 states would immediately outlaw abortion based on trigger
laws or pre-Roe bans still on the books, and another dozen would soon
follow. Already, each year, some 70,000 women in developing countries are
dying because of botched, illegal abortions, caused in part by U.S. policies
such as the Global Gag Rule.

The petition will be printed in the Fall issue of Ms., which hits newsstands
October 10, and online at www.MsMagazine.com.
For more information or to read the full petition, visit www.MsMagazine.com.

Dear Jessica:

I did recently blog briefly about this campaign. I love Ms. I am a feminist.
I know many, many women who have had abortions. But I believe that it is a private
matter and I know the campaign is to remove the stigma--but I also think it has
a "scarlet A" like effect. The campaign cheapens the seriousness and
the private right aspect of the abortion issue. It isn't my governments'
business if I have an abortion, it isn't my employers' business, it isn't
even my husband's business so by telling the world about my private decision
I am opening myself up to be harmed because I chose to exercise my private reproductive rights. Have you read Roe? It says that abortion is a privacy issue.

I can't believe you are going to send the list to the government who has been
seeking patients' abortion records in order to intimidate women. Why not register
women to vote? Why not tell women for the price of a manicure they can elect people
who will protect their rights, not demand to know what goes on in their bedrooms
and in their vaginas. This is tantamount to suggesting that the government has
a right without a search warrant to our medical histories and records. What next?
Would you think that women should sign petitions telling everyone they have been
hospitalized for major depression?

The campaign is a cheap publicity stunt for those who sign the petition. So if
I like Billie Jean King I am supposed to include in my decision to admire her her
choice to exercise her private rights? That isn't any of my business. Gloria
Steinem had an abortion. It is like saying, "Hi, I am Gloria Steinem and I
color my hair and had an abortion, too. I am really smart and I challenge people
and my uterus is also on display with my celebrity."

Really. Do you think if American political figures said it, somehow it would get
them elected? Do you think that men would wear a shirt that says, "I wear
condoms"? This is how to dismiss women as hysterics. This isn't what serious
women do. Serious women go to law school, get elected, and protect our rights,
they don't wear their uterus across their breasts.

Best regards

By the Waters of Babylon - by Stephen Vincent Benét (1937)

I was over at The Fat Lady Sings this morning. She was 'tagged' regarding favorite books. What a great idea. I hope some of you can make it over there. It's great to hear about other people's favorite reads. You can usually pick up some to put on your list of 'hope to read someday'.

The first question was: (1) What is the one book that changed your life? I have always been able to answer that one right away. Ever since I read this short story in high school English class, it's theme seems to have always stayed with me -- To much knowledge can destroy a civilization.

I wonder if this is why I have always resisted most of the technological advancements we have seen lately. I was terrified of computers (I was probably just not willing to learn) until the past few years. Now I could not live without one. Well, I suppose I could, but I would not like to give it up, now that I am catching on.

I despise the television now, though I do remember when we got our first color TeeVee as a kid, I thought it was, by far, the coolest thing ever!

I just gave the story a re-read after all these years.

WOW

Outraged As Usual

I'm so fed up today that I've been writing letters to politicians, news media organizations, reporters, the DNC, the RNC, you name it. Why I am suddenly starting to feel like some sort of fringe radical? I am an empathetic human being and there are billions of us on earth. We are probably in the majority but we are not power hungry animals and therefore don't have a voice in world leadership for the most part.

Connecticut like New York hasn't had to deal with rigged computer voting machines and the people actually got their point across at the polls. You wouldn't think that if you watched the fascists who pretend to be reporters on cable news. I don't understand why regular people aren't in charge of election polling across the country. The elected officials should have absolutely NOTHING to do with it and there should be term limits and a citizenship test before anyone can run for office... not to mention they should be able to speak clearly on one's feet in front of an audience.

Joe Lieberman has shown nothing but contempt for the political process in America. Maybe the people were wrong in trying to oust him for Ned Lamont. Maybe not. That's a democracy. We have to deal. Perhaps he regrets that he doesn't come from a state that employs Diebold machines or this wouldn't be an issue. Watch out Connecticut, you may have them by November.

Meanwhile the Hillary bashing continues on cable news as if those retards think that New Yorkers aren't paying attention to her every move and like we are going to listen to pundits, who for the record, are always WRONG. She scored points in my neck of the woods by telling Dumbsfeld off . She and Chuck Schumer got letters from people like me a few weeks ago asking them if they'd like to keep their jobs or support Joe Lieberman and Donald Rumsfeld. Apparently they listened.

I'm sick of the culture wars and the great divide. It doesn't exist except in the minds of the power hungry fascists that stole our country and their minions who control the mass media.

And another terrorist attack isn't going to change my anti-war mind.

----
PS: Apparently I'm not the only one who sees the connection between Lieberman's loss and the code red crap.

PSS: Oh my god. Check out this article especially the comments.

Lieberman Blogged Down in Connecticut

Great story from ABC News

Even though Lamont is downplaying this -- BLOGGERS RULE!!

From the story:

"There is also no question that bloggers — those online diarists simultaneously celebrated as a bold, new generation of citizen activists and derided as nasty socially challenged scribblers on a virtual bathroom wall — played a major role as well."

"It means that just as candidates for president make their obligatory visits to the county chairs of the party in Iowa, they're all going to [be] making visits to these people operating out of their living rooms in their underwear just offering their views on the world, who up to now haven't had anybody but a handful of friends paying attention. And all of a sudden, they're giant killers," Ornstein said.

Well, this citizen activist is mighty proud to be associated with our wonderful Blondesense Blog.

Kudos to the 'big name' blogs for all of their awesome work!

Just as I sat down to read this story, some blackberry jam oozed out of the saltine cracker I was eating and onto my pants. I spot cleaned the spill and put the pants outside to dry for a bit. I returned to the computer in my underwear to finish reading the article. I'm still laughing -- proudly!!

Dear Joe:

I haven't really said anything about the Lieberman/Lamont race, as I don't know enough about Connecticut (aside from the recent Stepford Wives remake) and I kinda feel like local races, even as much as they affect the national political climate, are really nobody's bidness but for the people who are being represented. I know, I know, we're in a deathmatch this time, and without some serious regime change, we're all doomed. I know. But how do YOU feel when people from an entirely different state, from an entirely different region of the country, come into YOUR hometown and tell you how to vote?

BUT --- My friend JanetL made sure that I got this Lamont e-mail first thing this morning (okay, morning for ME), and I wanted to share a part of it.

"We Democrats have a process for choosing our nominee, and we all ought to respect the outcome.

I hope that over the course of the coming days, Joe's friends, neighbors and constituents will prevail upon him to reconsider and unite with the Democrats across Connecticut who voted for change tonight.

Joe needs to hear from you. Please send him a message asking him to respect the voters -- we will deliver your note and post it on our web site:" http://www.nedlamont.com/respectvoters

Then Archie sent me this e-mail from Wes Clark:

"You see, despite what Joe Lieberman believes, invading Iraq and diverting our attention away from Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden is not being strong on national security.

Blind allegiance to George W. Bush and his failed "stay the course" strategy is not being strong on national security.

And no, Senator Lieberman, no matter how you demonize your opponents, there is no "antisecurity wing" of the Democratic Party.

Indeed, Connecticut Democrats recognized all of this, and yesterday they chose Ned Lamont as their nominee for the U.S. Senate. Now, I hope you'll join me in supporting Ned as he heads into the general election this November. Stand with Connecticut Democrats.

Send a message to Joe Lieberman to end his Independent campaign for CT Senate.
http://ga4.org/campaign/joelieberman/wwwskb74o53ttix
As a Democrat, I respect the will of the Connecticut Democratic voters and their decision to make Ned Lamont their nominee."

Now, y'all know that I'm no fan of religious bigots of ANY flavor, and GOPJoe is hardly one of my favorite human beings. Thusly inspired by Lamont's victory and kickass attitude, I wrote a letter to Lieberman, but I'm wondering if I should bother to send it in... Y'know, considering that GOPJoe is Mister "Higher Ground" who wanted to disclaim any affiliation with the Clinton presidency because of a blowjob, and who helped Dumbya fuck Al Gore out of a legitimate win. At any rate, here's the letter I might send...

Dear Joe:
Your time has passed. Grow a pair and try to develop, or redevelop, the dignity that you lost when you bent over for Bush & Cheney.

You lost. As your GOP massahs would say, to REAL Democrats, anyway, "Don't be a sore loser, you loser!"

You're way past retirement age anyway, I'm sure that there's a nice little estate waiting for you in Miami. Just not too close to the beach, though, 'cause you might see women out there, acting of their own accord and being all brazen and shit, which would REALLY ruin your day.

Lieberman- lying Republican

There's another dishonest thing I'd like to add about Lieberman's concession speech last night. I noticed that he mentioned that people should visit his website "when it isn't hacked". Suggesting that his website was "hacked" gives the distinct impression that the Lamont supporters are creeps.

Lieberman had some cheap ass web host ($15/month) and his site probably shut down due to more traffic than he paid for. I do web hosting and each customer pays for a certain amount of bandwidth. When the site exceeds it, it closes down. duh.

How the Religious Right Was Invented

A must read about Paul Weyrich, the guy who changed "morality" in this country- why the neo-conservatives/fascists need christian voters and why there aren't any real republicans anymore. Now THAT is a vast right wing conspiracy. Fascinating.

Shock and Awe: Something Democratic Happened

The people of Connecticut sent a message to the government on Tuesday. "We are paying attention."

Lieberman lost the Democratic primary in Connecticut. Lieberman plans to run as an Independent anyway.

It's perfectly legitimate to face an opponent in a primary election but you wouldn't think so if you listened to other elected politicians on both sides of the political spectrum. Who said senators and congress-critters should keep their elected positions forever and ever? Lieberman for one.

UPDATE 8:53am
According to Americablog, Jomentum was on GMA this morning and spinning like a fucking Republicant:
"So I worry that this victory yesterday by Ned Lamont -- which was a narrow victory -- will send a message across our state and our country that the Democratic Party has taken -- has been taken over by people who are not from the mainstream of America and that they are going to make this not Bill Clinton's Democratic Party anymore. And remember, Bill Clinton was a mainstream Democrat who was elected twice and governed with great success."
So this bitter POS, Lieberman, whom I didn't like from when he was running with Gore and probably another reason Gore didn't get even more votes, insists, from the Karl Rove Playbook that anyone who doesn't agree with the war or the way the country is heading, is an extremist. What a crock. He's no Democrat.

Interestingly, Bill Clinton will support Lamont now... and Bill Clinton wasn't all that liberal, thank you very much.

Here's more of his bullshit via Atrios:

LAUER: Let me go back to that line in your speech last night. I'll paraphrase it if you don't mind. You said, for the sake of your state, your country and my party, you will not let these results stand. It's a nice line in the speech, but the fact of the matter is there are a lot of Democrats who think that now going forward you are putting your own personal ambitions above the good of the party.

How do you respond to that?

LIEBERMAN: Well, I think it's time for somebody to break through the dominance of both parties by the margins of the parties, which happens in primaries. I think it's time for somebody to break through and say, Hey, let's cut out the partisan nonsense.

Yes, I'm a proud Democrat, but I'm more devoted to my state and my country than I am to my party. And the parties today are getting in the way of our government doing for our people what they need their government to do.

So in the end, Matt -- the great thing about America is that the people will have the last word.

Talking about "blowing" things out of proportion

I read the news story yesterday that a freelance photographer for Reuters enhanced 2 photos of an Israeli attack in Lebanon in order to make it seem worse than it was. The image enhancement made the smoke darker in one picture and increased the flares dropped from a fighter plane from 1 to 3. Nevertheless, the attack was real. We expect news photos to be real and we also expect the news to be real, but we've already learned that we can't expect that anymore. It's disappointing that news photography may be "photoshopped" (because that's my job as a snarky blogger and I usually tell you that I've enhanced the picture unless I expect that you should know better and if some people don't get it, then ooops!). Reuters pulled all the photos from the photographer from their database subsequently and reiterated that they have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to enhanced photos.

I just read over at Billmon that this news has come as real excitement to our right wing counterparts here on the innernets:

"Right Blogistan, which is to say, the pro-war cheerleading section, is currently holding one of its biweekly hate rallies over a pair of doctored Reuters photographs from the war in Lebanon.

"This enormous scandal, we are told, is proof positive that the liberal media is up to its usual lying tricks, that the IDF is not bombing and shelling the crap out of Lebanon's civilian infrastructure, but rather is fully occupied painting schools and escorting little old Lebanese ladies across the street."

Okay, so I promised updates when the second batch of stickers came in, and come they have.

I don't remember how I got to their site, but I found Carry A Big Sticker, and they have some HUM-DINGERS!

And they deliver quite speedily, so the pickup will be updated very shortly. (Nope, no lagniappe, but I guess since they're probably the last living Democrats in Arizona, I can let 'em off easy this time... Weird, isn't it? That the best stickers I've found lately have all come from RED STATES?!?!! There's something to be said for us vitriolic, angry liberals trapped in republicunt "turf"...)

For you bargain shoppers, the "JUST SAY NO TO SEX WITH PRO-LIFERS" stickers are a buck a pop, so STOCK UP NOW! (I sure as hell did! --- And I'm going back for more next month!) I'm also gonna get the Indian sticker, "Fighting Terrorism Since 1492," and about a dozen others... Some call it a sickness, I call it truck insurance... Hypocrisy, Thy Name Is . . .

George Allen (R-The Old Dominion at Least for the Next Four Months). You see, it's one thing to have a "moral opposition" to abortion, and it's one thing to claim (falsely) that Plan B is akin to abortion, but it's quite another thing to let that stand in your way of making a quick buck. Say, by owning stock in Barr Laboratories, which manufactures said Plan B.

Odds and Ends

The National Guard Troops at the Mexican border are rather bored but it has been a deterrent to illegal immigrants. No? NY Times

In 15 States Expand Right to Shoot in Self-Defense we learn that in Florida, "the law does away with an earlier requirement that a person attacked in a public place must retreat if possible. Now, that same person, in the law’s words, “has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force.” The law also forbids the arrest, detention or prosecution of the people covered by the law, and it prohibits civil suits against them."

What else is interesting?

No End In Sight. Thanks Condi.

I hate to take sides in a war that I don't know everything about but then again if the US under the Bushista administration is supporting a particular side, then I tend to not trust either of them.

Lebanon wouldn't accept the cease fire agreement drawn up by the US and France and I kind of don't blame them. The agreement doesn't call for Israel to withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon for one thing. If the Israeli troops had stayed on their own side on July 12th, there wouldn't be this mess in the first place. If the bully next door came on my lawn and I beat him up because I warned him to stay the hell away from me, why should I have to agree to let his brother stay on my lawn intimidating me if we were trying to make peace? Get that bully off my lawn, and then we'll talk or I'll keep lobbing mudpies at him and his family.

The central demand of the U.S.-French plan, agreed to after days of difficult negotiations, is "a full cessation of hostilities" under which Hezbollah must stop all attacks, and Israel must stop all offensive attacks. That's a victory for Israel because its military is not prohibited from defensive operations, a term that can be interpreted broadly.

Lebanon has indicated it opposes that stipulation because the resolution includes no timetable for Israel to withdraw thousands of troops from southern Lebanon, an area that has been under Hezbollah control for several years.

The U.S.-French plan envisions a second resolution in a week or two that would authorize an international military force for the Israel-Lebanon frontier, creation of a large buffer zone in southern Lebanon free of both Israeli troops and Hezbollah militants, monitored by the Lebanese army and international peacekeepers.

It demands Hezbollah's disarmed and the clear delineation of Lebanon's borders, especially in the disputed Chebaa Farms area, occupied by Israel since 1967.

An arms embargo would block any entity in Lebanon except the national government from obtaining weapons from abroad. That's aimed at blocking the sale or supply of arms to Hezbollah from Iran and Syria, which are believed to be the militia's main backers.

The text ignores several Lebanese demands, including a timetable for an Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon, a halt to all Israel attacks, not just offensive operations; and placing the disputed Chebaa Farms area under U.N. control. It also does not order the immediate lifting of a blockade imposed by Israel after the fighting began 26th days ago.

While the draft seeks the "unconditional release" of the two Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah, it is weaker on Lebanese prisoners held by Israel. It only encourages efforts "aimed at settling the issue" of those prisoners. Lebanon had wanted those prisoners released, or for the U.N. to arrange a prisoner swap.

"Kevin Barrett believes the U.S government might have destroyed the World Trade Center. Steven Jones is researching what he calls evidence that the twin towers were brought down by explosives detonated inside them, not by hijacked airliners.

"These men aren't uneducated junk scientists: Barrett will teach a class on Islam at the University of Wisconsin this fall, over the protests of more than 60 state legislators. Jones is a tenured physicist at Brigham Young University whose mainstream academic job has made him a hero to conspiracy theorists."

Bible- greatest fanfic of all times

So, I was downstairs in the kitchen eating some watermelon and low and behold yet another strange idea crept into my mind. This idea was no doubt aided by helping my children play The Da Vinci Code for PS2 and lack of sleep but think this one over.

First of all you have to understand what a fan fiction (aka fanfic) story actually is. That is were somebody takes the premise and characters from a known story (Harry Potter, Babylon 5, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc) and starts their own story with them. Some of them are cannon (adhering strictly to the laws/premises that the original creator set forth in the original show/book) others are non-cannon (the characters do not behave as they normally would, or other characters are added into the mix).

So, just humour me and jump on board my train of logic, such as it is. What if the BASIC premise of Jesus is true? What if there was this really liberal, hippie dude wandering the desert trying to teach people to love one another and preaching that if you don't take care of each other no one else is going to.

Now consider this; what if the basic premise fell into the hands of fanfic writers? Suddenly the hippie dude is now the messiah of some prophecy which may or may not have ever existed. Oh and we need some bad guys, you can't have drama without bad guys....bad guys of the day? Romans! So we need some action between Jesus and his gang agianst the Emperor and his gang. Oh shit, wait! The Emperor gets a bit pissy about seeing his name associated with bad guy stuff, so lets use some lower level crony that has some name recognition instead.

What else would a fanfic writer add?

Well if they are anything like today's fanfic writer, they would add romance and lots of exagerated (might one even say magical or miraculous) scenes. Fish and loaves to feed a hundred people? Hey, why not have him levitate on water? Better yet, lets turn him into a zombie so he can hang out with Lazarus and wreck mayhem upon the Romans! (apparently that chapter didn't make the Nicene cut).

And my proof that the Bible is nothing more than fanfiction run amuck? It was written several centuries AFTER Jesus died by people who didn't use their real names. Honestly, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.... in the Middle East....during 200 a. c. e.? Omar, Sharrif and Ahmad maybe, but hey, at least all they wrote was soft core snuff porn, not like those perverts who wrote the old testament with all that incest, circumcision and raping.

How Did We Get Here?

Ok, I know how the USA got here, what with rigged elections and the SCOTUS pulling the biggest boner in United States history. And I can see how Isreal got here, and call me a conspiracy theorist or whatever you like but I can't help but notice how, just when Sharon seemed to have realized that peace HAD to be made...well, he got REALLY sick. Really, really sick and really, really fast. He's still in a coma and they are still doing surgery on him.

What about England? When and how did Blair become Bush's bitch? Kind of funny that France was one of the few West European countries to not give W what he wanted and they had those riots, yet I don't recall hearing anything about the French police needing to bomb (or flood) their ghettoes to get things under control.

Asia seems to be playing their own game in the political world and doing rather well. Sure there is the threat of nuclear weapons, but lets face it, NK is more likely to SELL the knowledge than use it. And I expect China to keep them in line, after all it is their backyard, so to speak.

South America and particularly Hugo Chavez is still a thorn in the side to W's administration. But at least the leaders are paying attention to the global situation both politically and environmentaly.

But I'm waiting for that other shoe to drop. Its getting close to November and the Republicans are doing poorly, will Rove and his cronies count on the electronic voting machines to steal all these elections or will we be getting another terrorist 'surprise' just before elections to give those blood and guts rethugs a bounce?

Fluff Alert

Its Sunday here, so its time for fluff. Besides I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the bombings, facism and just plain rudeness that I've seen / experienced this week.

So, as a mental health service for Blondesense readers and bloggers I offer this: Best movie you've seen this summer - what is it?

For whatever reason, when things start getting on my nerves I almost without fail go to the movies. Wether it be a tiny cinema, a big stadium seating theatre or the drive in. (Yes, we have a few of them in my area, one used to show porn but its decided to go legit and pander to families. Its made a killing, especially by bringing in pony rides, hay rides and swingsets for families to spend their money on before the movies start.)

Over the last week or so I've seen Lady in the Water, Pirates of the Caribbean, Little Man and Monster House. The first two FAR exceed the second in my humble opinion. But what about you, dear readers, what movies have you seen and enjoyed, (or seen and hated) this summer?

Rethuglican Attempt At Humor

Hardy har har.
BTW, I read in the news that the soldier on the left is suffering from PTSD (really) and the guys on the right were vacationing with Dumya at the Crawford ranch last summer (gossip).

Outrageous!

What a jerk. Newt Gingrich is against the legitimate and fully legal American process of nominating and electing representatives to serve in Washington. It used to be called 'Democracy'. Now 'Democracy' means having a big country bombing the shit out of a smaller sovereign nation until they submit to the big country's demands.

People who exercise their freedom in this country are referred to as "Insurgents" according to Newt. Newt supports the worst kind of dictatorship in the world which is brewing in Washington. He must be reading the Nazi handbook. Newt is for "lying and dying" and has no solution for the Iraq debacle. It's easier to attack his fellow countrymen than admit he belongs to the idiotass party who fucked up royally. What if it was Teddy Kennedy who was being challenged in Massachusetts?

Here he is on Faux Spews this morning:
Third, you have what I think is a legitimate insurgency in Connecticut, which needs to be met head on and debated head on, which is people who say this is so hard, it is so frightening, it’s so painful, can’t we come home and hide? And I think if Lamont wins next Tuesday, it will be the beginning of extraordinarily important period in American politics, and in American history. For all of us to have this debate. How dangerous are the terrorists? How dangerous are the dictatorships? And what does America have to do in that kind of a dangerous world?
