-- Will Support DMV Commissioner Martinez and Policy of Verifying Authenticity of Social Security Numbers Before Issuing Licenses
9/11 Families for a Secure America will hold a press conference tomorrow to show support for New York State DMV Commissioner Martinez and the department's policy of verifying the authenticity of social security numbers before issuing NY State drivers licenses. As everyone now knows, driver's licenses obtained with fraudulent information played a key role in facilitating the attacks of 9/11. 9/11 FSA believes maintaining the integrity of NY State driver's licenses is imperative to preventing another tragedy like 9/11. It should be noted, this policy of verification is followed by many DMV's throughout the country and is a procedure recommended by the 9/11 Commission.
I must be missing something, but it's always been a pain to get a NYS Driver's License. When my son got his license, I had to go and get a certified copy of his birth certificate (had to do the same for myself a zillion years ago) and I had to visit the local SS office to get an official SS Card for my son to bring as proof to get his license and I had to bring the birth certificate with me to show that he was born and is the same person that they issued his SS# to when he was an infant. They wouldn't accept just the number at DMV. It's an ordeal here.
You also have to have a 5 hour driving class before you can take the road test. In NYS, you could never just stroll into the DMV and get your license without having adequate ID, proof of residency, and fabulous parallel parking skills. Now they are going to verify SS#'s it seems. But it also seems that the SSA also verifies your ID before they give you a card or a replacement card. I'm getting a headache.
